for those of you who run on treadmills...

I'm begging for a treadmill from Santa and was wondering how wide a belt is needed to be able to run. I know that some are very narrow and I want to make sure I get what I need to be able to run comfortably!

Thanks in advance!

Hi Michelle!

It is based on your normal walking or running stance. My treadmill at home has the normal width, I think 14 inches, can't remember. I have never had any problems running, and I use it pretty often. However, DH has to go to the gym to use a treadmill with a wider belt due to his normal walk/run stance being wider. His feet would keep touching the edge of the belt and the side of the treadmill due to his cadence. He is also flat footed so that might make a difference. You can always go to a sporting goods store and try running on a few and see how wide the belt needs to be for your comfort. You should be able to tell after a minute or so if you feet remain comfortably inside the belt width without touching the edges of the treadmill. Good luck getting a treadmill from Santa.

Hi Michele,

My belt is 18" - both my husband and I use it. Even if it was only me I wouldn't want it narrower. Part of that is because sometimes I wander (when I'm off day dreaming) and do not stay centered. This has been a perfect width for home.

The width isn't the part that bothers me...it's the length I have trouble with. My foot is always hitting the "hood" at the front. I paid so much money for this thing I can't just replace it, but at some point I intend to sell it & get another with no hood.

Good point Ruth! I wanted to add that the length on mine is 54". It more then accommodates me!

thanks, everyone! The one I'm looking at has a belt that's 18x55, and from what everyone's saying, it should be okay. I'm not a "big time" runner, but would like to incorporate it more into my workouts.

Thanks!
