For all you cat lovers

Terri,

I have a neutered male cat that insists on marking my house. If he looks like he is trying to pee and is near a vertical surface (i.e. a wall) check the wall for the wet mark not the floor. We finally had to move our cat outside, to a pen w/ an insulated house and heat (can you say spoiled), because we just could not get him to stop.
My evil Tangerine sprays and it's just awful. Man, I wish I could do what you did because I'm about ready to put him on kitty Ritilin. I read once that cats who do this have issues that need to be addressed and aren't doing it on purpose to upset YOU. Bullsh*t. He's been checked to death (all mine are fixed). Nonetheless, the little monster waits until I'm comfortably seated, then he walks into the room, gets close to the wall and looks DIRECTLY at me (as if to say "Watch THIS, b*tch") as he fires away. Then he tears off running as I jump up, screaming.... I'm glad warmer weather is here so he can spend most of his time outside. Meanwhile, when he's inside, I follow him with enzymatic cleaner and paper towels - but it's never enough. One of my girls also has... issues but now that Tangee's mostly outside I'm seeing a lot less evidence of her issues because HE's her problem. He's so aggressive and egocentric he stresses out everybody in the house. He's lucky he can sometimes be so cute... it's the only thing saving him. It's awful to love a bad man...

I took Joe the cat to the vet and thank goodness, he's perfectly healthy! The vet couldn't really explain why he squats but he doesn't have a UTI. :D

DH & I finally figured out why Joe's litter box has been dry; one of our dogs has been eating it! She's been throwing up for the last three days at night and it dawned on us that that's what's happening. She's done this once before and we finally caught on. Eventually, we'll get our animals healthy!

Hmm...could the dog be bothering the cat when he's trying to use the box? That could lead to him not wanting to use the box.

Try changing the location of the box to someplace more private (easily accessible by the cat, but not by the dog).

Also make sure that you get the odor of the urine in the carpet removed by using an enzyme-based odor killer (Anti Icky Poo is one). If kitty keeps smelling his own urine, he will be more likey to return to the same spots to keep using them as a toilet.

I'm so glad the little guy is o.k. Moving the litter box to a place where the dog can't get to it might be a good idea for both the cat and the dog! Another trick is to make the spot he's been using unappealing. Even just putting some object there temporarily as an obstacle might help.

I am so glad he is OK. I always hate to be alarmist but you can't be too careful especially where urinary problems are concerned. You did the right thing!! Hugs to your kitty. :)

I'm so happy your kitty isn't sick! I'd still wonder if he's feeling "off" though. If I were you I'd try to make sure he gets adaquate amounts of water/wet food. I think male cats probably need special attention with their delicate pee-pee problems so they don't get sick. It wouldn't hurt.

Good luck getting your animals to behave!

Amy
