Foot lift during abs

I did the abs from CTX All Step today and it sparked a question for you all! I have been meaning to ask this forever but always forget!

In this workout and some of the older ones (ie MIS) during abs, Cathe has you raise one foot an inch or so off of the ground. She never really explains "why" you lift the foot. Is it meant to press the lower back into the ground? If that is not it, what does this do?

I do feel that in MIS but I didn't in the CTX All Step abs last night. I wonder if the difference is that in MIS you already have your foot raised up on the step so it engages the abs even more so?

If you put your hand on your lower abs, you will feel them contracting. It is difficult to hit the lower abs as the abs 3 parts always work together.
