Food - Paul Dean

>I saw her make bread pudding from Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
>She used two dozen glazed doughnuts and smothered them in
>butter and sweetened condensed milk, among other things. I
>couldn't believe what I was seeing! My arteries clogged just
>watching her make it.

Is her show sponsored by, or does she get kick-backs from, junk-food manufacturers? (Just imagining these 'foods' makes me a tad nauseated).

The foodnetwork is basically my "white noise" channel because I don't find any shows redeeming these days. But clearly the Foodnetwork makes it's big bucks on the entertainment factor of each of it's shows. Nutrition and recipies are a by product of their success.

I also enjoy Ina (Barefoot) but feel dreadfully uneasy with her size and balloon shirts. She has some fab recipies and most of us educated healthy people can figure out how to lighten or clean it up a bit.

Ellie Kreger is pretty good and offers quite a few vegetarian recipies.

Then there's our "separated at birth Cathe look alike", Giada.

Love Alton brown, kind of a cross between a brainiac and a maniac but very educational and humerous.

Can't stomch Sandra Dee and her open cans of jam, frosting or pudding into every recipie.

Rachel Ray is so way over rated now that I think she's an Oprah Mini-Me.

I love the Foodnetwork challenges, especially the cake challenges when they fall over!!!

Ahhh, good thread

I also enjoy the Food Network, I make alot of recipes from Emeril, Bobby Flay, Tyler Florence, and Mario Batali, to name a few. I have made a few of Paula's as well. Believe it or not she does have some recipes without butter..

Yes, there are times when I turn on Food Network and I think they are cooking way "over the top", but then I do what is my perogative to do..

turn the channel to Bridezillas!}(

*shrugs* Yeah, she uses a lot fat, sugar, etc. She's a typical southern cook at heart. I think she has even said she eats her food in moderation. I would love a small portion of some of that yumminess from time to time.

There are healthier cooks on the food network, and for what it's worth, you can always modify recipes for your liking. I think she is a ball of fun and makes some sinful recipes.

You will always find the extremes with the gray areas in the middle. It is up to you to use your head, find your comfort zone, and go from there.

Paula Deen is a hoot! I love watching her, because she and her sons seem so natural at what they are doing. And her kitchen is so pretty too.

I have adapted some of her recipes to healthier versions. And have some in my notebook that are not adapted, but are waiting for a special occasion to unleash them.}(

I did, however, look up from my elliptical workout Sat. to see her wrapping bacon around that mac and cheese, bread it, and deep fry it. I was agast! Even so, I still think she is fun to watch and enjoy the way she includes her family and history into her show.

A while ago in Vegetarian Times, they had a little blurb about two women who had a popular local cable vegetarian cooking show. They were approached by the Food Network to see if they could bring it to "the big league". However, the Food Network said something along the lines of "but do you think you could add some chicken and meat dishes?". The women politely declined. :p

I do admire what Paula has accomplished. Pretty impressive, considering she didn't even start until she was 40!

And I really like Elie Krieger, I have a couple of her recipes that are absolute favs. An AMAZING carrot and green apple salad comes immediately to mind.

And I love Bobby Flay and Iron Chef. Mario's interesting to watch, but not my style of food. Too heavy and too many animal guts. (eek)

I've been a faithful watcher of the Food Network since it began. Back in the 90's, the programming was much more diverse and not so market-driven. Granted, it wasn't as Slick as it is now, but it was great TV. Since Scripps bought the Food Network, it's all about profit and the charm is gone.
As far as Paula Dean is concerned, her marketability is her personality, not her cooking abilities. I enjoy watching her; she comes across as genuinely warm and funny.

I saw a guest on Paula's show cook fried butter balls! They balls of pure butter that were rolled in some kind of coating and then deep-fried! Gross!

I gotta say, the thought of a fried butter ball makes me nauseas, but as far as Ms. Paula's cooking goes, being a GRITS (girl raised in the south), I recognize her dishes as the stuff we had at family reunions, which doubled as cookin' competitions, and at covered dish events at the church.

And occasionally at Sunday dinners and ALWAYS at holiday time.

Just thought I'd throw that in there :7

Ohyeah, and that Krispy Creme bread pudding gave me a headache just watchin' it, but my DH woulda been in food heaven.:7

How strange that the Food Network won't put on a vegetarian show, but they sure jumped on the low carb bandwagon when that was the thing. What was that show? Some guy cooking massive amounts of meat with no bread. Oh, yum.;) Low Carb and Loving It, I think it was called.

When it first came on, the Food Network did have a guy that I liked who was vegetarian. He was black and Southern and he did new twists to some classic Southern/Soul food. I can't for the life of me remember his name, but I really liked him.

I'm from the south, and just listening to Paula Dean makes me smile! She sounds just like the next door neighbor I grew up with 40+ years ago.

Her recipes may be over the top, non nutritious, etc., but it's your choice to fix the dishes and eat them, or not. I don't see that what she does is any different than Krispy Kreme selling their donuts in a Krispy Kreme store. People don't declare that Krispy Kreme shouldn't make their donuts, they just make a choice to eat them or not. The same goes for Paula.

I say, good for her for being successful and fun to watch!

I agree....Food Network is the new white noise!

I like Ina because of her personality as well. I just want to have friends over when I watch how excited she gets when her company gets there. She also makes a fine coctail!

I would do a Paula Deen recipe once in a while for treat and I agree that she is so warm. If you watch the Thanksgiving show she makes a bunch of appetizers (including bacon wrapped puff pastry), sits down to enjoy and says, "I'm starving!" One of the boys quietly says, "Momma, you ain't been starving for about 30 years!" or something like that. I didn't hear it but my husband did and he about fell off his chair.

I like Alton Brown because I always learn something.
