Fitness Walking for Dummies

I just bought this book and was wondering if anyone else has read it. I want to take up walking again and maybe incorporate some running but I need a program, some tips and definitely some modivation! Also does anyone use hand weights while walking? What is a safe weight to use, and what type is easiest for sweaty hands to hold on to?

Thanks!

Go to http://www.racewalk.com for form pointers. Using weights is really not a good idea, but using something like a Power Belt http://www.walkerswarehouse.com/store/merchant.mv?Screen=SRCH&Store_Code=002&Search=powerbelt or the gizmo Leslie Sansone uses in some of her tapes would be OK. http://www.lesliesansone.com/

I wouldn't use these accessories for awhile until you get used to walking, because walking correctly takes some concentration. I feel that music helps as a motivator, and to keep your pace up. http://www.sportsmusic.com These guys have the BEST selection of walking music.

Make sure you get the right kind of shoes and start out on flat land, or on a track. Prevention Magazine is a good source for walking tips http://www.prevention.com

Walking is great because you can do it anywhere and anytime of the year (I love mall walking!) and you won't get injured like you might with running.

I 2nd HB's links and also advise that http:www.coolrunning.com has a great, great, intro to running program called Couch25K in 9 weeks. Do take a look at it. They also have a active check-in thread daily for progress. Best running program I've found so far!!!!!

Also John Bingham's books The Courage To Start & No Need For Speed are very good for new runners. John "The Penguin" Bingham started running slowly and has become the Patron Saint Of The Back of The Pack at road races across the nation.

Hope this helps
