I'm so excited! I'm on the mend from shoulder surgery and just got the okay to start running again. My DD and I went out for the first time yesterday (she turns 10 this weekend) and we did almost three miles! It was so fun. First we had to go out and get her properly attired - running skirt and matching top :) She's very active anyway so this wasn't zero to active or anything. It was hot and humid here, and at the end of our run the sprinklers at the trail head went on, so we had fun cooling off by running through the sprinklers! Anyway, today I signed us up for our first race together. It will keep me motivated as I get back in shape and we'll spend time together. She's way more built for running than I am (she's all arms and legs). She'll probably have to slow down to keep pace with me! We've got three weeks to train! Wish me luck!!

Good for you!!! You've got me motivated to ask my 9 almost 10 year old son to start jogging with me! Let us all know how it goes.

That's awesome! It's fantastic that your daughter is starting to be fitness conscious at such a young age. I'm hoping my kids will be like this as well. They already try to "exercise" with me, which means just getting in my way most of the time, but I try to not discourage them. One of my goals is to sign myself up and run a 5K. I am sooooo not a runner!!

Oh yippee! I'm glad for your post. My 12-year-old daughter wants to get into track when she goes to Junior High next year. I'd love to go running with her. And, just like your family, she's built much more for running than me (she's almost as tall as me). We're planning on running together this summer. She'll be leaving me in the dust in no time. We already do 15 mile bike rides together, and we have so much fun. We'll have to look for a 5K to do together. I'll have to get her a good pair of shoes.

Thanks for the inspiration.

I understand your excitement completely!!! Last year I ran three different 5K races with my then 7 year old DD. I stayed with her the entire distance in all three of them and insisted she keep her pace slow. She attends a a x-country camp in the summer and winter and a track camp in the spring, but I don't think they have run as far as 5K so I was unsure that she would be able to pace herself. We just ran two more 5Ks together in May and since she complained about me holding her back I decided to let her do her own thing. Well, guess what? She placed first in her age group in the first 5K!! In the second one it was 70 degrees and she struggled a bit so placed in the middle of her division. In both cases I was so proud and excited for her.

P.S. In both 5Ks I placed first in my age group.....a huge boost for my lagging confidence after trying to come back after a nasy injure.

Thanks for the enthusiasm!! I'm way more excited than I thought I'd be. The big day is June 19. My DD is on the Autism spectrum - really high functioning. Just because group sports will never really be her thing that adds to the fun of this. She does riding... swimming ... but this is a first as far as "competition." Being a mom gets better and better!
