Fibroids

I remember someone saying something about fibroid problems a while back but when I searched, I couldn't come up with anything. If anyone is having fibroid issues, could you let me know what you did about them? I was told hysterectomy is the only way to go by my doctor. I think that's pretty radical. Would like some input. They are driving me nuts!!

Hi JULIER
A wonderful book to get is "The Wise Woman Way" by Susun S. Weed.
The one I have is Menopausal Years and it is a natural approach to helping with symptons of menopause, however, there is a whole chapter devoted to fibroids. My sister had fibroids and had to have them removed. Just the fibroids. If you get a chance, try reading the book. She has other titles, too. You can order it from amazon.com as well. All her books are alternative approaches. I hope this will help you. It sure doesn't hurt to get as much information as you can.

Hi Julier, while I have no experience with this myself, a good friend of mine was told at age 25- prior to having kids that she needed a hysterectamy for fibroids. Devastating since she always dreamed of a family. She got 2 other opinions who both disagreed with the first and she was treated and now 10 years later still has her uterus and 2 kids to boot. PLEASE PLEASE get other opinions for such a major decision. Even if you already have or don't want kids losing your uterus is not a light decision.

Good luck to you.

I totally agree. I have a 20 year old and an 8 year old. My husband had a vasectomy so we are now "done". However, hysterectomies scare me to death. Major surgery and at my age why do I need to do that? What did your friend end up doing about them and did the fibroids come back later?

among other treatments for fibroids are: soy isoflavones--yes, they work to shrink them; removing JUST the fibroids, not a whole hysterectomy even if you are puffy, uncomfortable and bleeding alot. Here in Chicago, you can also get information on the new "seed" radiation treatment that they are using for prostate cancer where they put seeds into the fibroid to attract the radiation and kill it without damaging surrounding tissue...lots of ways to go..keep going to people til you find someone who makes sense.

That's interesting. I just started drinking soy milk out of the blue. I haven't seen the seed radiation treatment on any websites. But that information will help narrow it down. As far as the soy goes - how much does one take? Do you know? I am telling you - this forum is wonderful. Everyone is always so helpful. Thank you.

I take 50 mg a day--but check with a osteopathic practioner or do some experiments for yourself!!

In late 1999, I found out I was pregnant and during the initial ultrasound I also found out that I had a fibroid tumor. A few weeks later I miscarried. My doctor could not tell me, definitively, whether or not the tumor had anything to do with it. He did tell me that there is a procedure that I could have to remove the fibroid (without a histerectomy sp?), but that if I wanted to try to have children, then surgery should not be considered. Several months before had I found out I was pregnant, I had been having problems with irregular cycles and lots of disgusting clotting. My doctor, at the time (who has since been fired) simply changed by birth control pill. Since things weren't getting back to normal, I decided to quit the pill and then I quickly got pregnant.

Since my miscarriage (about 14 months ago), I had been having the same problems with my cycle until about three months ago. I started using an alfalfa supplement along with a skin brushing technique that I purchased/learned from T-Tapp.com. My periods are almost back to normal. At least, more normal than they have been in the past two years. Just as a warning - Alfalfa has been known to contribute to weight gain - Theresa Tapp has told me that her brand of Alfalfa will not make you gain weight - I have gained a few pounds - I don't know if it is from the alfalfa, I've changed my workout rotation and that could also be the cause.

I am disapointed with the amount of available information on Fibroids. I have found a couple of websites that have been somewhat helpful but it really is frustrating to not be able to get good answers! I will be trying Soy Milk. I haven't heard of Seed Radiation - does anyone know how it might affect future pregnancies?

I've got them, and my mother, grandmother, and aunt all had hysterectomies because of them.
Surgery should be your very last option, especially if you are planning on having children.

I highly suggest the book,
FIBROIDS: A complete guide to taking charge...
Johanna Skilling, (2000, New York: Marlowe & Co)

It's a compilation of studies and comments on every remedy known to man and woman, with stories from scores of women with uteran fibroids.
Plus, in the Bibliography, there are literally HUNDREDS of references to other books, studies, articles, and web sites.

I am sorry to hear that you suffer, but as you probably know, it's very very common. I started suffering symptoms from mine when I was 22, and being 32 now, I can tell you that diet makes a big big difference. Check out the book, can't stress it enough. Good luck!!

I have had fibroids since I was 27. I miscarried at 13 weeks. The doctor wanted to do a myoectomy immediately. Luckily, my mom told me to get another opinion. ( This first doctor told me that I would never carry to term. He also told me that I had an incompetent uterus.) I went for the second opinion and was told that this surgery, which just removes the fibroids also leaves a bit of scar tissue and less area for the fertilized egg to adhere. I stayed with the second doctor and had two successful pregnancies. ( Both were 2 weeks late...so much for the incompetent uterus.) I was curious, what dietary changes did you make that helped? Thanks.
