Fast Twitch vs. Slow Twitch

I have a question with regards to F/T versus S/T muscle fibers. I think I understand the difference between the two but my question is: does one train based on which type of muscle fiber they have more of or can one train to develop one fiber more than the other? In other words, if I want more of a toned look versus building mass (I realize as a woman I will never really "bulk" up) would I try to develop one muscle group over the other or will my body type and the predominant muscle fiber determine that? I hope this makes sense. Thanks!!

Try a google search using the terms "fast twitch and slow twitch muscles". I put this in and got a bunch of stuff but didn't have time to peruse to see if it was what you were looking for.

Man, was your post confusing!!

Your body is made up of both slow and fast twich and to know the exact proportions is very expensive. Some weird test. I don't think it has to do with how big you can get though. I just think it has to do whether you are better at endurance or quick strengh (for example long distance running versus sprinting). Based on this example, one would say that Lance Armstrong has a greater percentage slow twitch and a world class sprinter, a greater percentage fast twitch. But you want to train both, unless you are involved in a sport where one has to be involved more than another.

Like with a Cathe higher rep, lower weight workout, they say your slow twitch muslces and trained but to really get those fast twitch you have to heavy up.

Not that I am making this any clearer...mostly I am babbling. Maybe you should do your search and get some more accurate info...Hey, I tried.....

AND...

I think you can train your fibers to function better, but I don't think you can increase the amount of one or the other. Like you said genetics and predominant muscle fiber type determined that. I THINK.:)
