Fashion Question

I don't normally care what is "in style" or as my mom would say what "they are wearing," but I want to make sure that I am not stuck back in the 80's or something on this one ;)

I have a suit that I got from Victoria's Secret a bit ago and it is baby blue with a protrait collar. I've only worn it a couple of times...once to a christening and once for Easter. It is really nice and I like it a lot but is the portrait collar look WAY "out of style?" Can I wear this to work on a summer day? (I am an attorney).

Thanks,
Christine :)

Hi, Christine,

I don't think the type of collar matters so much as the construction of the suit. If the jacket is boxy or has shoulder pads (eek!) or the pants are high-waisted or feature tapered legs, then I wouldn't wear it as all of those things look very dated. Otherwise I suspect it should be fine!

My workplace also features suits, and I have learned to be really careful not to buy anything really trendy, because you get no real wear out of it....

Hi Christine, I agree with Marie. A portrait collar is fine. Especially if it is flattering on you. I don't know if your suit is a skirt suit or pants suit.If the pants are tapered, forget it.

I also agree with no shoulder pads, unless they are very, very thin. If it does have big shoulder pads, you can't just cut them out, it will ruin the line, and the fall of the jacket.

I say go for it if the trousers are straight or flared, but never tapered---that gives a dated look quickly, and is very unflattering, even to the most fit of figures.

Thanks guys! It's a skirt and I think it might have a very slight shoulder pad. Not the football player look at all though ;)
