EXTREME morning sickness

Just wondering how many of you experienced morning sickness? this is my fourth pregnany (7 weeks) and it is already starting. My previous pregnancies i would get sick day 1 and continue right up to delievery with a couple hospital stays in-between for IV's. I was hoping this one would be different..... :( after today I don't think so..

Anyone have any good tricks to help morning sickness? Anyone else have severe morning sickness? It has been 4 years since my last pregnancy so just wondering if there is anything new out there that will help. thanks

Ann

Hi, Ann,

I'm so sorry you are suffering. I had morning sickness, but it wasn't extreme by any means, and now that I'm in my 6th month, I no longer suffer from it. I DO have a friend who had extreme morning sickness the entire pregnancy. She talked to her doctor about it, and he prescribed a "morning sickness" medicine for her to take. She said it worked wonders. I'm sorry I can't remember the name of it right now, but I wonder if you should ask your doctor about it. If I find out the name, I will post it here later . . .

Hang in there . . . I don't have any other rememdies since mine wasn't extreme. Saltines, ginger, peppermint and juice seemed to help me along - and just plain "gritting" through it.

Hi,

I'm so sorry you're going through this. My sister and cousin were in the same situation in that they had severe morning sickness 24/7 for their entire pregnancies. Their doctors prescribed some special anti-emetics which really helped. Without the medication, they had to go to the hospital for IVs, but if they took it they were okay. Sometimes the health risks of severe morning sickness can be greater for mother and baby than the risks of medication. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the medication they used, but your doctor would certainly know of it or something similar.

Here is a website you also might find helpful. It is run by Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children which is quite a well-known teaching hospital in Canada. They have a 1-800 number helpline for morning sickness.

edited to say: The name of the medication was Diclectin, but there are other medications/treatments/strategies shown on the website. M.

Outside of medication, I've been reading about these bands that you can wear on your wrist that are actually for motion sickness.
Every band that I've read about also claims to address morning sickness as well, since it's really nausea that they help.

I know folks that swear by them, and I'm about to give them a shot!
There's a lot of different kinds out there, but I'm starting out with the cheapo option called Sea Bands. They're about $10 for a pair.

Dear Ann,
I'm sorry you feel so bad. A few weeks ago I saw a news segment about a woman who had morning sickness so bad that she decided to terminate the pregnancy at three months. Then later working with a new docter, she learned that she had a condition called "hyperemesis gravidarum" (extreme morning sickness) and that there were treatments to help women get through this and give birth. After that, she went on to have two healthy children--this time being treated for the nausea and sickness. It was heartbreaking though how much she regretted ending that first pregnancy. Turns out that first doctor wasn't knowledgeable enough about the condition to help her. I don't know how extreme your sickness is, but you might check out this link to get some answers and treatments for extreme sickness. Or ask your doctor about this condition.

I am so sorry about your sickness...I was sick, very sick, for 4 months! (Oh gosh...this brings back bad memories) I was working then and I had to take my maternity leave the during first four months of my pregnancy because I could not teach...I was barfing every 30-40 minutes for 2 months out of the four I was sick. There is some kind of medicine that they pp mentioned and I heard it worked...I didn't take it, dumb me.
I tried the wrist bands, preggy pops, all the stuff you've probably heard of...nothing...I just suffered through it.

I feel for you...all I can tell you is that it WILL PASS!! Hang tough.
BTW, CONGRATS on your pregnancy...at I know that morning sickness is a good sign...the little one/s are sucking you dry so they are growing!!
HANG TOUGH!!!
