Extra piece of placenta?

Hey everyone! I am new and I would like to join this forum! Congrats to all of you new moms and moms-to-be!

I am 21 weeks along and 3 weeks ago I went for my ultrasound, when I found out I was having a baby boy!...well, the technician said at the end of the ultrasound that I had an extra placenta (my DH thinks she said extra piece...if it makes a difference). I asked her if it was a bad thing and she said no. I asked her again, and she laughed and said, no not at all, but the hospital will need to be aware of it during delivery, she said. So, then I went to see my doctor, who was 3 hours late (they even sent me home and back to kill time) and I was with my DD age 4...Soooo, by the time he came in my room, I forgot to ask him about it as I was distracted by DD.
I don't want to call him but I have looked things up online of course, and it sounds kinda bad like mentions of fetal and mother death and everything. Good Lord... Anyone know anything about this? Thanks in advance!

congrats clarissa!
no clue! never heard of it. i know mine was LARGE but....? on your issue. id call to clarify. thats why we pay em $$$$!:):D

I don't know what it means for the pregnancy, if anything at all. But I'm fairly sure that if it were a real issue to be concerned about, that they would tell you (they have to!), and they would alert your doctor.

I'm guessing they just wanted you to mention it to make sure that you deliver ALL of the placenta(s) when you have the baby. Otherwise it can cause infection and all that.
