Exercise bike

Cathlete
I injured my foot yesterday and I can't do my beloved step. I pulled out my exercise bike - I'm planning on using it today. I haven't used it in years (like 6 or 7) I think it will be totally boring. Anyone who uses one regularly or has any suggestions on what to do while on one (read, watch TV, Take a nap :) ) please let me know.

Thanks

Linda

I'm sorry about your injury. I am with you. I hate the stationary bike! I can't even imagine a spinning class being fun (but I haven't tried one so I'm sure it might surprise me). I used to ride the bike in college when I didn't really have time for a workout so I could study at the same time. I even used a highlighter! I'm sure I wasn't pushing myself at all. Maybe my leg muscles just aren't strong in this area. I should probably do it more often and would get better and enjoy it more.

If you bike is near the TV w/ DVD. Pop in any of Cathe's interval cardio workouts and match her efforts while on the bike. You won't be able to even see the words on the page. In fact, i bleieve,if you can read, then you probably are not working hard enough to get much benefit. Many of my bike workouts are my hardest ones. I wear a HRM that confirms my effort, and I sweat like you can't imagine.

Put the bike in front of the tv and then pop in an action movie. Target a minimum rpm of 80. I find that during the action scenes my intensity soars.

Another idea if you like interval training: (still with a movie on and using a timer)

5 minutes warm up
5 minutes 80 rpm, resistance 2 (1-low, 10- high)
2 minutes 80 rpm, resistance 4
5 minutes 85 rpm, resistance 2
2 minutes 80 rpm, resistance 6
5 minutes 90 rpm, resistance 2
2 minutes 80 rpm, resistance 8
5 minutes 95 rpm, resistance 2
2 minutes 80 rpm, resistance 10

then reverse the pattern...If sweat is not flying increase the rpm.

Have fun!

I hate the stationary bike also. 5 min. is like 10 hrs. to me. LOL!
BUT.......I purchased a couple of the 'Cardio Coach' CD's that people have been talking about and I've used them with my stationary bike and I don't even think about the bordom anymore. Cardio Coach is a great way to have fun on boring equipment. You get motivating music and a coach telling you exactly what to do. Time goes by FAST. I've got volume 2 and 3 and they are 30-40 min. of intervals with hills/sprints. I'm planning on getting volumes 4-5 soon. They get harder the higher the volume. 5 being the toughest.

ps. you can buy the CD or download a MP3.

I use the Boot Camp All-but-core premix with my stationary bike. I do a hard interval when Cathe does cardio, rest while she rests, then go to an aerobic speed for the lower body and upper body. I end up riding 12 miles in the 45 minutes, plus a warm up and cool down. You can also do intervals with an Imax workout.
