Elliptical use and sleeping toes

When I use my elliptical, my toes fall asleep! Sometimes after 15 minutes, sometimes not until 40 minutes but it can get quite uncomfortable! This a.m., I was talking to a guy in my running group who said the same thing happens to him.

Anyone else? Any tips to keep the tingle at bay??

I'm no expert here but, I have heard of people changing to different shoes to try to allievate the problem. I read about this somewhere too (not just elliptical use but stairclimbers and exercise bike use too) and the problem is pressure on certain areas of your foot during the exercise, causing the foot/toes to go to sleep.

Try wearing a different style of shoe and see if it helps.

It happens to me too! I've mentioned it to several people and they all say the same thing happens to them. It must have something to foot positioning and that your feet aren't really moving as they would on a treadmill or bike... strange none the less. All I can do is commiserate with you, sorry :)

Yeah!!! All the time. That is primarily the reason I don't use this form of cardio. Listen, I will gladly buy another pair of shoes if that's what it is. But I have no idea of what I should buy.

Sarah-

I hope you still like your elliptical, and your foot is doing well!!

Try LACING your shoes differently. The way you tie your shoes can cause a depleted blood flow to certain areas of your foot in certain positions.

I'll look for a link that demonstrates what I'm talking about and then post it here. I'd hate to see everyone go out and buy new shoes if changing the lacing would work!

This next one I think is described as a Butterfly lace style. I've tried it and really liked how it changed the fit!

In addition to these suggestions, I have also heard that pushing from the hip rather than the foot helps. Moviing the feet around on the pedals - e.g. back and forth, forward and back; and raising the resistance level rather than going faster. I have to say that none of these really work for me, including the opitions in the article, but they do allow me to get through 20 minutes. After that I have to change to a different machine.

BTW: I can always tell when I am at about 12 minutes, because that is when my feet fall asleep.

This happens to me too!! Both on the elliptical machine and the stairmaster. Unfortunately, using different shoes doesn't work for me. x(
