Elliptical under $1000

Yesterday I went to Sears and Dick's to shop for an elliptical machine.
I was so disgusted because most of the machines I tried made a noise like it was rubbing something. One did not even have the footpad screwed on.
I do not want to spend over $1000.
Does anyone have an elliptical that they like in my price range?
Sears and Dick's are the only stores around here. I have not tried Play it again Sports. A good used one could be better than the new ones I tried.
Am I crazy to want something built well for five to eight hundred dollars?

I got an AMAZING elliptical from Costco about five years ago. It has all the bells and whistles (incline, resistance, built in fan, HR monitor, etc.) and was only $500. I use my treadmill a lot more now, but there was a time I used the elliptical a TON and it is still in perfect working condition.

I was in Costco a while ago and didn't see the one I bought (it was quite a while ago) but I saw that they have one. I didn't really take a good look at it.

I don't think it's unreasonable to want something well-built for a moderate price.

Hi,
One thing you might consider is a used floor model version of a higher end machine or one that was returned by a customer but could not be resold at full price. Sometimes you can get a really great steal on a product that has been used only as a floor model or returned by a customer and could not be resold at full price, as opposed to refurbished. Overstock.com could be a good place. You can also do a google search on used elliptical machines (i.e. precor or life fitness). Always try before you buy if at all possible, and fully understand the return policy. Your local Craiglist could also be a nice option for you. I've seen so much equipment in great shape that people are just wanting to get rid of.

Hope this helps! Ping if you have more questions. I've done alot of research on elliptical trainers, spinning bikes, and alot of other equipment.

I bought a Proform 20.0 about 2 months ago and it's been great. I tried it out at Sports Authority but found it cheaper online (no shipping or taxes). It felt sturdier and was less noisy than all the other elliptical's I tried in this price range. It has lots of little perks like being able to hook your MP3 player into it and listen through it's speakers. It has a fan, some preset workouts (including circuits) and a couple of games I don't use. The footprint is relatively small and it doesn't take up as much space as some ellipticals (it doesn't fold up though).

Here's a link to it:

I had to be patient with the shipping, the place took 5-6 weeks to deliver it. My husband put it together in a couple of hours and said it was pretty easy (I didn't help :p ). If you have a Sports Authority near you, maybe you can give it a try first. HTH.

Thanks for the link Kathy,

I tried the ProForm XP 160 Crosstrainer at Sears.
It made a clunking noise when I used it. I liked it other than that.
Does your Proform 20.0 make any noise like that?

Hi again,
I haven’t heard any clunking noise on my Proform 20.0 at all. I was impressed with how solid and sturdy it felt when I tried it out at Sports Authority (as compared to all the other’s I tried). It doesn’t have an incline but the resistance goes from 1-12 which is plenty (I mainly use 3-8…and 8 is pretty tough).

Did the Proform you tried at Sears have an incline? I tried a couple of Proform models there that were more expensive and had an incline that made a lot of noise.

I am very happy with my purchase but I think you should try it out first before you decide. Do you have a Sports Authority near you?
