Elliptical Trainers at the Gym

How accurate really are Elliptical Trainers at the Gym? When I do cardio on it for 30 minutes, it says I burn about 325-330 calories. But I recently read that Ellipticals are up to 30% inaccruate:eek: . SO I only burn about 145-150 calories for a half hour!! That is a big difference. Is this really true or not?

If you want a more accurate read out on calorie burn, you need to purchase an HRM. No machine is going to give as accurate of a number as an HRM will....HTH!:)

Is it programmable--do you enter your weight when you start? If yes, it's pretty accurate, although someone in good shape will burn less calories than someone in not so good shape.

I never focus on that stuff (calories burned according to equipment, HRMs, etc.). What I go by is getting my heart rate up (meaning I'm sweating & panting) for about 40 minutes each workout. I've just never seen the need to use gadgets, calculators, gauges, etc. for cardio. In fact, often I don't finish a Cathe workout b/c I'm running late & I don't stress as long as I've gone for 35+ minutes.

where could I get an HRM? Would they have at like Sports Authority or Olympia? Thanks for your help.

Yeah. I enter my weight when I start. It says I burn about 325 in a half hour,(sometimes alittle more f I had my Diet Turbo Tea energy drink.) But I looked somethin up online, entered my wieght, my activity, and duration, and it gave me how many calories I would burn. It said 142. So I don't know which one is right. And i do get a good sweat goin when doing it. Geez, everything is sooo confusing    . LOL

You can probably get one at either store you mentioned. You can also shop online for one...They are sold all over the place!

Sarah (imafitnessfreak) always posts the name of the website she uses and says they have the best prices, etc. You might want to catch her attention and ask her the name of it because I can't remember....

Well, like Laura said...it depends on your weight and what kind of shape you are in. Based on what you've told us in previous posts, the read out you are getting on the elliptical DOES sound a bit high...but that's JMO. :)
