*thinking* about getting dh one for Christmas (at this point, maybe a New Year's gift). He thinks he wants a treadmill but is open to considering an elliptical trainers. He has knee problems exacerbated by running so I was thinking the elliptical might be better.

Anyways - anyone have a really good one - either one - where'd you get it - price range (so i know what to expect) - recommendations?

Thanks!!!

Kelli,

Hi. Saw no one had responded to your post yet, so thought I'd give you my .02. I run outdoors 95% of the time but for those times when I can't due to weather, etc. I do have an elliptical (a Life Fitness). My husband is isn't quite as "into" running as I am, uses the elliptical as his primary cardio. We purchased ours at "2nd Wind" and got one that was more towards the higher end, both price (around $2000) and "bells and whistles" (heart monitor, multi programmability, etc.). WE both feel you can get an incredible workout on this (less the impact of running). Having said that, I am also seriously considering getting a True treadmill soon just for variety. You can certainly get an elliptical for much less than that that will provide good benefits, this one just seemed to "fit" me better and I wanted to get one that would last forever. OUr first elliptical (now in basement in our weight room) was purchased for about $400-500 and also provided a good workout, just not the same "extras" and didn't seem as comfortable to me. I'm sure he'd be happy with either piece of equipment!!! Just try both out for an extended period of time to made an informed decision. good luck.

I have both and my treadmill definitely gathers more dust than my elliptical. My E cost $800 and came with a computerized programmer and wireless HR monitor. I love it! It's much more of a workout than the treadmill IMO, but then again, I'm not a runner, just a walker.

It really depends on what he likes. If he likes to run ( knee pain doesn't necessarily stop runners from wanting to run )then an Elliptical is like a really dull alternative. I know it's low impact and good for the joints...but it makes me want to hurl myself off of it because it is so boring in comparison. It's like being asked to walk.
