I need some help. can someone recommend me something or a way to help myself to eat better. i love to exercise i dont have a problem with that but my eating is bad. in the sense that i eat a little bit of portion but not good enough to keep my fat out of my thighs. am small from my waist but need to work on my eating to get better. i lost 15 pounds in 3 month with cathy tapes and running and am in 126 right now and i love it but i still have some fat on me.

Help. help. help

Dominican1 and thank you

Hello Dominican,

It is often suggested that keeping a log of your daily food intake will help with that. I did this for a few months when I first started to change my diet and began exercising. It DID help because it makes you VERY aware of you put in your mouth. Will keep you honest and probably less likely to "cheat" and eat badly.

If you are looking for help more along the lines of nutrition though, hopefully someone else can help...I just try to eat low fat but many ladies here may have a much more "involved" eating plan than mine so they could probably help you more.

Have a happy holiday!:)

I have been following the Zone (somewhat loosely) and I realy like it! It consists of eating 30% protein, 30% fat, and 40% carbohydrates. The protein is super lean, the fat is healthy fat (chicken, fish, yogurt, lowfat cheese, lean red meats) and the carbs are good carbs (fruits and veggies). The breads and pastas are used in extreme moderation and sugar is out!

I have noticed amazing changes in my body since I started eating this way, like
1. more energy
2. more flexibility
3. weight loss
4. clothes fit better
5. sleep better
6. menstrual cycles become regular immediately
7. skin is clearer (there is a mild break out phase a few weeks into it as the fats in your body start breaking down)
8. cardio feels stronger (feels better when doing intense cardio)
9. increase in endurance

If this sounds like something you would like to try, I recommend the book "What to Eat in the Zone" by Dr. Barry Sears. For about 30 pages he is spilling his concept then he has recipes. It is only $7.50 new and then if you want his other books, you can get them off ebay or half.com for a few dollars.

I agree with Wendy. Recently I started keeping track of everything I eat and my workouts for each day in a notebook/journal. It's helped me VERY much! I feel really good when I write down the good foods I've eaten -- that in itself motiviates me to keep eating correctly.

Something else that has worked for me is to read. You will learn so much about how food affects your body and health. It's very, very interesting to learn. I believe knowledge is power. It's one thing to know something is "good for you." But when you know and understand exactly WHY it's good, and what exactly happens when differents foods enter your digestive system and blood stream -- it makes a huge difference on how you choose the foods you eat.

Hope this helps. :7

Hey Marla G -

You know it makes a ton of sense that reading up on foods and their effects on your mind and body would be a great way to not "diet" but to change your way of eating for a lifetime. Do you (or anyone else) recommend any good books for reading about this? I was just wondering if there were any particularly good books out there that would not only be educational nutrition-wise but a little more fun to read then, say, a completely scientific book. (a book with lots of layman descriptions?)

Thanks!!

I liked reading the "South Beach Diet" because it taught me a lot about how food affects my insulin and blood sugar levels, and how that affects body fat and health -- very easy to read, and very interesting.

I also like "Lean Bodies" and "Lean Bodies Total Fitness," both by Cliff Sheats. Another interesting book is "Your Body's Many Cries For Water." Water is more important than I realized.

I bought my Lean Bodies books through half.com for about $1 -- they're both hardovers. You should find them at the library, too, which is where I first found them before I bought my own.

Go look through the library and see what they have. There's a lot out there.

Have fun!

I like "Picture Perfect Weight Loss." It's not a specific diet plan, but helps you learn to make better choices: foods that you can eat in larger portions, for satiety, and which have high nutrient value without a high calorie count. It's also a yummy book to look through, because of the comparison pictures (one page of a small amount of a high-calorie/high fat food vs. one page with mass quantities of lower calorie, nutrient-rich foods).

THANKS!!
I actually went and ordered these on Amazon, they sound so good, and literally I got Lean Bodies for $.75!!! Of course, the total adds up with shipping and handling, and of course, I had to add on that wireless router I've been dying to buy... Ack! Online shopping is out to get me! :)

Anyway, I'm really interested to read the cries for water book, I'm a big believer that dehydration is the main cause for a lot of things, it will be great to read about it and get some confimation!!

Kathryn, your book sounds great too - if I had read your post before my order, it would've been on there. Oh well, I guess I need to pull in the rein anyway. That's what the library's for!

ruppie,

I have a wireless router -- it's great! I know what you mean about online shopping -- very fun & a little dangerous to the check book.

My UPS man and I have a built a nice friendship. :D

Kathryn -- sounds like a good book. I hope to find it and check it out.

Happy New Year!!!
