Eating for Triathalons/Marathons etc

Hi to the educated crowd..

I have joined a women's group through my church that is going to do a triathlon in August.. Its not a full tri, just a mini, but most of the women in the group are beginner exercisers and this is their first ever type of endurance event. Admittedly, I am not much of an endurance athlete either.. I have done a 1/2 marathon, but typically focus WAY more on weight training than mega long endurance type of cardio workouts for my exercise.

I have been asked by the group to come up with some suggested food/eating strategies to best optimize our fueling requirements for this race.

While I know what it takes to optimize muscle growth/decrease fat for the way I workout now, I don't have a lot of knowledge in the best way to eat for a triathalon. I am assuming most of the same rules apply, but wanted to get some input from you all.

If anybody can suggest some books, reputable web sites, past experience, I would be truly grateful!
