Early Pregancy--Strength or cardio

I just found out that I am 6 weeks pregnant, which would explain the extreme fatigue I have been experiencing. I know that the fatigue will subside, but for now I only see to be able to workout every other day. I need a full day to recover to get up the energy for another workout.

My question is, where should I focus my energy for now -- Strength or Cardio? I just don't think I can manage both at this time. I have been doing cardio, and have cut back on duration and intensity so that I don't wear myself out totally.

Thanks for any advice!

Congratulations!!

I have no idea where you should focus your energy in terms of exercise, but take care of yourself and your baby! Sounds like you are listening to your body by taking rest days in between workouts. Best wishes!!

Strength or Cardio?

Hello there,

Hope you are feeling a little better. Just remember, this all will pass and you should start feeling like yourself again after about the 12th to 13th week. As for your question..... I would say that both strength and cardio are equally as important. You need those muscles for the tasks of mothering (i.e. picking up baby, the carseat, the stroller, etc) and you need the cardio to maintain your cardiovascular fitness and endurance. You can drop your cardio down to 20 minutes 3 times a week and still maintain. I would suggest only doing one set per strength exercise and maybe decreasing the weight if your body is telling you to.

Remember, all this will pass soon. Your body is getting revved up to grow that wonderful little person for the next nine months. Do not push yourself and listen to your body. There will be plenty of time to get back to a somewhat normal fitness routine for you after the first trimester passes.

Keep in touch. Hang in there. We are all rooting for you.
