early morning/late night workouts

This morning I got up at 5:45am to do a kickboxing workout, this was a first in a long time that I got up soooooo early to workout. I usually workout late, 9:00pm. (Work and DD). Although I feel great that my workout is done for the day, I feel I did not put alot into it. My muscles were tight from sleeping and I just could not punch and kick with the same umph that I have at night. At the same time my late night workouts sometime are a little off because I am tired at the end of the day.

So, which do you think is better, getting up early but have your muscle tight or doing a 9:00pm workout and be tired thoughout the workout.

ps. I do try to workout at lunchtime, but if I have a meeting in the afternoon I don't want to look messy. Once a week is the norm, but time is an issue.

Luv2tri,
I think working out in the morning is a better idea than at night IMO. But maybe not so early like 5:45. What about 6:30 or 7:00? Or wait a sec you work so maybe you havta do it that early. Well, than maybe you sould try going to bed alittle earlier and wake up to do your morning workout. Since you said your muscles are fairly tight in the morning, maybe stretch FIRST before you workout (maybe just a quick 5 minute one on your own) then do maybe a muscle conditioning one. Then when you come home try a cardio one, or even do one on your lunch break if you can. But if you workout at night, try not to make it too late maybe like 7 or 8 so you acn go to bed. HTH you!

I also like to work out in the morning but agree that often my muscles feel too tight. I know this may sound crazy but you may want to try to get up 20-25 minutes before you want to work out. I use the time to make lunches, get stuff ready for the dog, etc. Usually just moving around for that little amount of time gets my body warmed up and ready for exercise.

I'm definitely a morning workout person. I usually get up around 5:20 to work out at 6 (I don't have to be to work until 8:30). As it's getting darker in the mornings, it is harder for me to get up, but I'll get used to it. I wake up when it gets light, so in the summer when it's light at 4:40am, my sleeping is over!

I might sometimes have more energy at night, but 9 times out of 10, something comes up (could just be plain laziness!) and I skip my workout. I know that about myself so I've always worked out in the am.

Adri makes a good point about going to bed earlier. That helps me TREMENDOUSLY, but I'm really bad about going to bed on time. But it really does make a huge difference. You might try it.

Jennifer made a good point. Maybe if you do something other than working out for about 20 or so minutes your body will start to "wake up" and maybe the tightness will fade off. That was a good point.

I can't wake up in the morning. Just can't do it. Wish I could, b/c morning workouts would be my preference. - get it out of the way, feel great, not hanging over your head like a big to-do.

I also find the timing of dinner to be a challenge. Sometimes I come home ravenous and need to eat right away, then I have to digest, meanwhile it gets later and I grow more tired. Versus, exercise right away and then eat dinner at 9:00 ....late!

Hmmm... I'm talking myself into waking up the am.
