DVD Question

Cathlete
I have a small exercise room with a TV and VCR. They are hooked directly to each other, there's no receiver or other sophisticated hook up involved. I'm really wanting to purchase Cathe's new tapes on DVD, and would be willing to buy a DVD player to do so - BUT I'm unsure about the connections. Will I have to completey disconnect my VCR and connect the DVD? Or can I buy some kind of splitter/adapter that will let me have both hooked up at the same time? I have SO many tapes on VHS that I'm reluctant to sacrifice one for the other. I just don't want to have to do a lot of monkeying around everytime I exercise to switch from DVD to VHS. Any experienced DVD'ers out there who can help?

I know this is late but...

Thought I would try to help!

I have a VCR and DVD both hooked up to my TV. Here's how I did it:

My cable runs from my wall to my VCR (ANT in). There is a cable wire running from the ANT out connection on the VCR to the ANT in connection on the T.V. (where the cable wire normally goes).

My DVD is connected to my T.V. at the "video" connection on the TV, and the audio goes from the DVD player to my receiver. I know you don't have a receiver, but your T.V. may have an audio in connection you could use. If it doesn't have this, you may need to buy an "RF modulator" (about $30), that will allow you to hook the DVD up to your T.V.

When I want to watch the DVD, I change the T.V./Video button on the T.V. to Video, and the DVD plays. If I want to watch the VCR, I simply put the T.V. channel on 4 (or channel 3 depending on which you have chosen), and pop the tape in, or watch T.V. through the VCR!

I know this sounds complicated, it doesn't translate very well. You can do what I did - take all your instruction manuals to a Radio Shack and they will tell you what you need to do

Hope this helps!

Thanks!

Thanks for your help. I'm going to print your message to help me. I may pay Radio Shack a visit after I take a closer look at my set-up. Thanks for your help! - Sarah

You Can have both a DVD and VCR

I don't know the exact way my husband did it, but I have both a DVD and a VCR on my tv in my workout room, so it is definitely possible. Since the Firm has no DVDs out and Cathe has several videos not on DVD, I would be lost without my VCR. But I really like DVDs much, much better because the quality is superior.

DVD vcr

You've pretty much got the answer to your question, but I wanted to let you know that directions for hooking up the DVD to the VCR and tv come with the DVD. It takes a bit of unhooking and rehooking, but I didn't have too much trouble with mine.

Thanks! Love this forum

Thanks for all your help. I think I'm going to shop around for cheapie DVD players and I think I'll get in on Cathe's DVD pre-sale! I just can't resist. Surely there will be more vids coming out on DVD in the future?!?

The VHS will go the way of LPs and the 8-track tape within the next few years. So IMO you are smart to invest in DVDs. The DVD market is in its infancy right now, but will mature in the next year or so. I for one do not purchase VHS anymore. When you experience DVD technology, I'll bet you'll be the same way.

Why do you think VHS is getting so cheap? I think it's because it's on its way out.
