DSL v. cable

I sure am upset. My DSL has been down now for 2 days and I haven't been able to get online except at work, where I am now. Apparently, although Verizon is required by law to share its lines with Earthlink, they make it as difficult as possible for Earthlink to provide consistent service to its customers. My DH is sympathetic to this, but I can't take it anymore. I think we're going to have to switch to cable. Has anyone had any problems with connecting to the internet through cable?

When I finally get back online I'm going to have about 500 emails to read...x(

DSL goes down with all networks from time to time. It's just how things are with technology. Everything is changing at lightning speed, and it's difficult for the techs to keep up with it. There really is no perfect, or 100% reliable system. I know people with cable who have no service for up to a week at a time when the cable network either goes down, or they're working on the lines in the area. Cable is fast too, but if the service is down, so is your Internet connection. I think it's just how it is with all of them, no matter how you connect. Sometimes things just happen, and you have to wait it out. I'm sure they're working on it, because they have to abide by FCC rules that require them to fix things within a specified time frame, or they get fined. Hang in there! They'll fix it. Are you using Earthlink or Verizon? If they share their lines and it seems to be a constant problem, can you switch companies? I had Earthlink dial-up, and I had almost constant problems. AOL wasn't much better, but they were a little more reliable. Now we have DSL through our local phone company, and while the system does go down from time to time, overall they're the most reliable we've had so far. Sometimes you don't have a choice, depending on where you live. Hope this helps!!

Hi Nancy I don't know what cable service is in your area but I have Comcast and had it for a few years now and never ever had a problem yet knock on wood. It was never down once since. So IMHO I would say cable over DSL.

We had Cox cable at our prior home which was reliable. But we had nothing but trouble with Adelphia cable after moving. We switched to Verizon DSL & it's been quite reliable. We use a wireless network for our 2 machines, & Adelphia would not support it. Their solution was 2 full cost hook-ups.

So it looks like a mixed bag between DSL & cable.

I have cable internet through Time Warner/Roadrunner and love it! We have not experienced any problems. Unlike my old AOL dial-up, well that's another story. My phone company, SBC, is always trying to get me to do DSL. Needless to say, I have to get a little rude with them since they think their DSL is better than cable. Uh, Hello?

Give it a try. :)

recently, I got Comcast Cable and a new E-machine computer! It has been a lot better than the Earthlink dial-up, and you are never "kicked-off" the internet! I stil have the Earthlink acount because I have had it for 4 years and haven't shifted through all the email information yet. I hope to move this year, so I hope the new area has cable internet!

I also have Time Warner Cable/Roadrunner and have never had problems. The only time it has ever been down is for maintenance or really bad weather and then it never stays down for long. I work at home as a medical transcriptionist through the internet. Our hospital lets us use any hookup we can get, but they prefer cable over anything else as they have found it is faster and more reliable.

We have Cox Communications (cable) and are pretty happy with it. The price is kind of high - I think we pay ~50 a month - but the service is good. They are pretty quick about getting you up and running if you're down.
