Dryer problems

Does anyone know what it means if your dryer keeps taking longer and longer to dry than it used to?

I've cleaned, vacuumed the lint screen -- but am wondering if there is some additional cleaning to do before either getting a repair call (translation: DH starts taking the thing apart for weeks on end) or is this a sign that the dryer is ready to be retired?

Thanks in advance to any home-appliance-wise Catheites!

Hi Barb,

I would check the vent hose and vent that dryer is connected to and clean that out as well.

It could be the heating element. A handy dh could do this with relative ease, I believe (but don't quote me on that).

Thanks Sue,

DH is very handy and good at it. It's a time issue -- thank you for the tip.
It looks like dryer needs a check-up!

If the dryer is geeting hot then it isn't the heating element.

The dryer hose or ducting is probably clogged or some animal is nesting in it.

My first thought is the vent hose is clogged somewhere. But, then I thought it may not be the dryer at all. I had a problem a number of years ago where the washer was going and it wasn't ringing the clothes out as well. If the clothes are wetter going into the dryer, they will take even longer to dry. How do the clothes feel coming out of the washer? Are they wetter and heavier? If so, try a second spin cycle and see if that helps.

Thanks Dave and Brenda for the ideas.

Brenda -- the clothes are definitely the same degree of wetness, great idea though. I will double check that tomorrow a.m.

Dave -- animal nesting? Yuck. I will check the hose or actually DH will check the hose.....

Thank you!!
Barb:) :)

Hi Heather,
Thanks for the tip.

We cleaned out the duct and vent last night and it seems to be working better.
So thanks to everyone for the great info!!

Have a great day,
Barb:) :)
