Dry Throat During Cardio

Hi everyone,
Does anyone else have this problem? When doing cardio my throat gets so dry so quickly! Of course I drink water & it helps, but by the time I'm through my stomach is starting to hurt from drinking too much water during the workout. I had been chewing gum & it helped quite a bit, but now I hear chewing sugarless gum is bad for you & may even give you a "paunch". (I need no more "help" in that area, thank you!) I can't chew sugared gum, it makes me nauseous. Hard candies - same. I do take meds which give me cotton mouth for a little while after each dose, but don't know if that's part of my problem or not. So far I am continuing the sugarless gum as I cannot think of anything else. I still drink too much water, even with the gum. Any ideas from this wonderful educated group? :) Thanks-
Ruth

Try drinking 8 ounces of water 1 hour or 30 minutes prior to your workout. I experienced this cotton mouth when I'd run and following this advice eliminated that problem.

Also, drink plenty of water the day before doing cardio.

Hi Mad! I find myself really intrigued by your "handle"! Thanks for the info, I will try it right away tomorrow AM. I swear I feel like I have a hairball sometimes while stepping! :) Thanks again-
Ruth

how about thinking of lemons!
he he
just kidding..

:)

but thinking of them make me pucker and salivate..

when i was dancing we used to suck on hard candies before performing to prevent dry mouth ... lemon drops?
I have no idea if it really worked or not.

you can find gum sweetened with other sweeteners at healtfood stores.

Starlight -

How did you know to spell Madeleine that way? Most people spell it without that middle "e".

My handle is a combination of my son's (Nathaniel) and daughter's names. Yup, I'm a proud stay-at-home mom.

I hope my advice worked for you. I can really tell the next day if I didn't drink enough water the previous day. I think it takes a little while for your body to hydrate so just drinking during your workout is not enough to get rid of that cotton-mouth.

Remember to drink plenty of water AFTER your workout as well.

If you're looking for gum, you might want to check out the local pharmacy, in the dental care section, where you can find some gum especially for dry mouths. I forgot the brand name, but they also make toothpaste and mouthwash (with some kind of enzymes in that help to keep your mouth hydrated).

Hi MadNat! (nickname) Well, the truth is that Madeleine has always been a favourite, & it was on the short list for whenever I had my daughter. Unfortunately, I never had that little girl! How old are your two?

Thank you again for all your advice - I have been trying to drink water at a steady rate every waking moment because my schedule is so erratic it's hard to "drink ahead". It seems to be helping, but I have to say I know the location of every public restroom in the greater Severn area! :-rollen

Take Care, Ruth

Hi Kathryn,
This is exciting news! I had no idea anything like that existed. And here I've been wrestling with this problem for years. Thanks so much for letting me know about it...I will certainly be looking into it! :-jumpy

Hi! This is strange for me too.It happens to me in spurts. I don't know if its allergies or what, but what gets me cured is cough drops.( I keep a bag in my entertainment center-always handy).I only take one and in about 20 mins into my cardio I'm good to go!(what a rush when you drink h2o after a cough drop--woo-wee) I hope this eases your throat problem it can be annoying!(Been there!) Take care and Good luck! your friend in fitness--Francine

Ruth:
I don't know if this will make sense at all, but this is what happens to me...

I generally do NOT have this problem UNLESS I've had something extremely salty the night before a workout (I workout in the early a.m.). For instance, the other day my husband and I went out for chinese food ( which I LOVE)....the next day, during my workout in the morning, my mouth was so dry and cotton-mouthed...I was slugging down water like every two minutes!!! Since I generally don't ever have this problem, I kind of attributed it to the salt level in chinese food...(of course, then again, I could be way off base here...)

Hi Francine,

That one never occurred to me! I use them at work sometimes because I am around animals all day & sometimes I will have an allergic reaction to one of them ...Thanks for the info, I will try this too!!

Hi Terri,
I have this problem no matter what I eat, but have noticed it is worse sometimes & I'll bet that's what it is...I do cardio v. early in the morning too, & with my schedule that can be no more than 4 hours after dinner! Interesting thought...I need to watch the salt anyway. (Although like you, I love Chinese!)
Thanks for this idea, & thank you to everybody who responded...I knew I could count on you guys! :)
