dr visit question

Cathlete
so today was my big day - gestational diabetes test, etcc. dh went with me. test seemed fine though the stuff was awful. results in a day or 2. the concerning part was when they mesured me i measured very small - 24 instead of almost 28. i am trying not to be too worried or upset. the dr ordered an us for me and i go tomorrow morning. anyone had this happen? i hate to be an alarmist, but i am anxious. baby's heartbeat was fine, no other issues. and my swellings/bruising is varicose veins. somewhat uncomfortable but managable.

i am kind of nervous needless to say. any input would be appreciated. hope everyone else is well.

Hi,
Measurements by the doctor are not that accurate, an ultrasound is more accurate. I measured 1 week smaller throughout my first pregnancy than on track by the end. Perhaps this baby's growth is slow and will fill out in the upcoming weeks. You still have 16 more weeks to go so I bet the baby will catch up. Also, are you sure the due date is right? I wouldn't worry.

you are so kind to reply to all my questions! i know my dates are accurate b/c we had to do the hormone injections, etc. and at my 20 wk ultrasound i was right on target. i am hoping her tape measurement was somewhat subjective. i am just starting my 28th week so i hope he is bigger than a 24 week baby. thanks so much for the reassurance. it means a lot, especially as i ahve never done this before!

Morris,

I had a size-date discrepancy with my son but suspected it was his transverse position (must have been). Just a refresher on measurements for those new to this stuff... the fundal height in centimeters should be approximtately equal to the number of weeks gestation betweem 18-30 weeks give or take. After 30-32 weeks, genetics and other factors influence baby's size. I was taught that if there is a discrepency of 3 cms or more (though this is not universal I've learned) that a size-date discrepency exists and should be evaluated. The cause can be as simple as baby's position or the examiner's measuring technique (there is right and wrong way to do this) but can be more serious and warrants evaulation.

Try not to get nervous and focus your energy on getting to see your little one again. Let us know how the u/s goes.
