Doxie Dental Cleaning

My 10 year old Doxie has horrible breath. The vet checked her teeth and thinks that that very back two need to be pulled and the rest cleaned. The procedure is a lot of money and I am worried that if they put her under she might not wake up and feel a tad silly having dental work done on a dog.

She is in good health and I am confident with the vet but I need some encouragement or other success stories from people who have taken the plunge and had their dogs teeth cleaned by a professional.

I understand your fears and frustrations, having owned doxies in the past, I also did remember that sometimes poor dental health can lead to heart or(other?) complications, it would be good to talk to your vet about your concerns, and about the possible consequences of not having the teeth cleaned, there may be alternatives, I don't really know. Some vets have credit type arrangements to help with expenses, you could ask.

Good Luck with the little dog:)

Not a dog, but I've had various cats' teeth cleaned over the years.
And my old, diabetic boy Scooter (who is no longer with me) had to have several teeth extracted (his top two 'fangs') at one point. I was very worried about him going under anesthesia, but everything turned out okay (once the vets figured out that it was dental problems that were causing some symptoms he was having ).

I had my dear Cavalier King Charles Spaniel teeth cleaned last year. He had horrible breath and absolutely REFUSES to chew any hard treats including milk bones. He doesn't chew rawhides... nothing that will aid in teeth cleaning. A friend of ours is a vet and said it is very common to clean dogs teeth under anesthesia. he had 9 teeth removed!!! Which i'm told isn't uncommon. Gues what? not even a year later and his breath is starting to stink again. I can't get a toothbrush in that mouth no matter what!
I'm told the dangers of dental caries is far worse that that of having the procedure.

I have had my dogs teeth cleaned and everything went fine. Tho after getting the bill I swore I would be brushing their teeth too. Also my cats have all had their teeth cleaned at one time or another and also have had some extractions. No problems and they all definitely felt better afterwards. It is no longer unusual to have your pets' teeth clean and has become part of normal vet care. It is a preventative to more serious problems like heart disease.
