Donating Blood

Hubby just notified me this morning that we are going to give blood Saturday for a friends wife. She is dealing with placenta previa issues and will need alot of blood. I know my TTOM is coming too. Say I am having my heavy period day and I give blood that day, is this gonna be too much for me you think? I normally feel weak the rest of the day in general, but don't know how I will be if I am already losing blood. I just don't want to pass out. I am so afraid of that feeling and is why I drink and eat alot before and after workouts. I never want to push myself to that extreme.

I think the amount of blood you lose during a menstrual cycle, while it seems like a lot, is negligible (spelling?). If your blood level is low, which they will test for, they won't take your blood. I am a regular donor and it always lowers my endurance for a day or 2, but I think it's something important that every healthy adult should do. (I work in a hospital lab and know all about blood shortages and how important donors are.) If you are able to donate, please do it and if you seem at little weak for the next couple of days, feel proud that you did a good thing.

Charlotte, I don't think it's a problem to donate blood during TTOM. You really don't lose much blood during your period. If you have any doubts though, you can always call the Red Cross and ask them. HTH:) AND they will give you a cookie!!!

Michele,

I don't want any cookies! LOL! Your too funny!!! LMAO!!! Gonna stink to have two rest days as I am just getting going real good here, but this woman needs our blood and I don't want anything to happen to her. She is having her baby on April 19th as they will be doing a C Section.

Charlotte~~

Well then, can I have your cookie!?}( :9 :7

Michele

P.S. Your friend will never forget your generosity and kindness.

Michele,

Give me your address. I will mail it to ya. It might get crumbled though. LOL!

Yeah, I just hope and pray nothing happens to her. This can be dangerous to lose too much blood.

Charlotte- You should be fine giving blood during TTOM. It's your iron levels they check for, so if you donate right after your cycle, that's when you're likely to be your lowest.

I feel fatigued for 4-7 days after I donate whole blood, so take it easy. (Once I started donating platelets, I'm perfectly fine after my donation and can work out the next day, so I switched and now only donate platelets.) Drink a lot of water before and after!!!! :)

They might not even let you Charlotte. They won't let me here b/c I don't weigh enough. Apparently you have to weigh at least 120, at least in NJ.

LauraMax,

LOL, but not really! In PA, it was 110 and I donated blood often up there. In Maryland, not sure what it will be as this is where I am going. Probably will be fine though because I weigh 115 in the nude, first thing in the morning. After breakfast, and my clothes on, maybe 125? ;-)

Charlotte, the one time I passed out after giving blood was when I was on my period. My cycles were extremely heavy. And I felt like crap for a couple of weeks afterward. I know that's not what you wanted to hear. But it did happen to me.
