DOMS and protein?

Hey all you gurus:

Does anyone know if there is a connection between muscle soreness and protein consumption? I ask because I have always had low protein consumption and am just about never sore no matter how intense and heavy my workouts are. (And my muscles don't look big,either, although they can do the work) Now that I am increasing my protein I am a little sore - immediately. Anyone knowledgable about that??
