Does anyone know if this is true?

I think my BF% is in the high 20's - just from callipers - never had it tested. I can see my abs. I had a pro male bodybuilder tell me if you can see definition in your abs then for a woman the highest your bf% can be is 18 and for a man with abs def the highest it can be is 14. Does anyone here know if that's accurate?

I'll be walking the Komen 3-day (60 miles) the week after Cathe's RT. Here's my webpage.

Lorrie,

I'm not sure where he got his information but it sounds more like an educated guess to me. Fat distribution is a highly individual thing. Personally, I gain weight in my lower body but you can always see my ab muscles, even if I'm overweight. So for me, this doesn't apply. Also, my body fat right now is around 20-23% and you can see my abs. This is exactly why the more sites on the body you do skin fold tests on, the more accurate your number will be. He is basically saying that all you need to do is take a skin fold reading from your ab area and that just isn't enough information to get an accurate number.

Lorrie:

Try this suggested method of testing for body fat and see what you come up with:

1. Multiply your hips (inches) ____ x 1.4 = ___ - 1 = ___ (A)
2. Multiply your waist (inches)____ x 0.72 = ____ - 2 = ____ (B)
3. Add A + B = ____ (C)
4. Multiply your height (inches) ____ x 0.61 = ____ (D)
5. Subtract D from C, then subtract 10 more: C-D-10 = ____ % bodyfat

Charlotte - that's a neat formula - may I ask where you got it. Plugging my stats in I came up with 17.12% - much better than the upper 20's that I've been thinking. This whole issue just fascinates me - so I guess I really should just invest in me and do a water submersion test huh. Thanks for that formula!

Lorrie:

I got it from Mackie Shilstone's Lean and Hard Workout book. Check him out more at mackieshilstone.com. I'm in the middle of doing his Lean and Hard training, which is high intensity intervals and weights. My body fat came out to 10.6%, which sounds low, but I'm a scrawny thing!!!:7

I don't believe your BF is in the high 20's - mine is around 18 or 19 and I CAN see my abs. I would think there's more to it than that, however.

I used the method that Charlotte posted and it measured me roughly 1% higher then my omron which I know is not an accurate measurement. I just use it as a gauge to see if I am going in the right direction. This means that I am clueless as to weather the # is right but it's probably closer to the truth then what the omron says...

Have you ever had the underwater test before? Now, I'm not really a water person, but this test scared the be-jeebies out of me! Brought back horrible memories of asthma in the pool. The results were even scarier, but then, that was many years ago, before Cathe.:7

Agreed Lori. From all of the tests I've done and researched, I think the circumference test (measuring the body with a tape measure) is the most inaccurate. I think the electric impedance devices (scales or those things you hold in your hands) are next, and then the calipers (which are probably the best way outside of the hydrostatic test). The calipers have to be done by someone other than you though. I believe if you're doing it yourself (which of course you're entitled to do :)), it is more inaccurate.
