Does anyone else modify weight workouts?

I'm sure others do this. I've been modifying my wt workouts in order to go heavy. I'm really trying to push myself-getting ready to "BRING IT" with P90x}( }( }( (which I just got yesterday). What I do is slow the pace down and go as heavy as I can to lift for 8-10 reps. I also change it up and add some more sets (I usually skip the leg presses- hate em) This morn did GS legs and totally suprised myself that I squatted 50 pounds - regular and plie squats. I also felt like I could lift more:eek: !! We'll See tomorrow :p. Would love to hear how others are modifying and seeing gains!!

PS: just wondering for those of you with P90X- I was thinking of taking a week off wts and doing just cardio before starting. Good idea or bad???
thanks

Good for you Catherine! THat's great. I have been modifying in the opposite direction. I have used much lighter weights than Cathe until recently. I can match her on almost all the workouts now.

Before the HC series came out, I modified PUB to go heavier. I'd do chest/back one day and shoulders/triceps/biceps two days after. I'd pause the DVD between sets so I could rest. I'd use a barbell for bench presses and rows. Pausing the DVD a lot also allowed me to use heavier weights for lateral raises and post delt raises, and switch to a lower weight for front raises. I couldn't go heavier for biceps though. This body part just keeps lagging behind.x(

Since going heavier than Cathe during GS-Legs keeps me from fitting into my skinny jeans, I either match her or go lower. Yesterday I did the latter, using no weights for the squats, 5-pounders for the rest of the exercises except for the slow lunges, where I used 3's. Still a great workout. Next time I'll match her again to keep my legs guessing.

I think taking somewhat of a recovery week before starting P90X would be a good idea. I wouldn't necessarily eliminate weights entirely, but do a light workout or two.

When I did P90X, I just jumped right in (though I started kind of "in the middle" with Shoulders and Arms, because Chest and Back looked too "scary" at first!), but before I started a HC rotation, I had somewhat of a recovery week, doing moderate weight work focusing on functional fitness and core strength, like Core Secrets. The P90X "recovery" weeks are somewhat like this, focusing on moderate cardio, core strength and functional fitness, and stretching. You could pattern your "pre-P90X" recovery week somewhat on that.
