diet help for kidney disease

I know that proteins are important to muscle building diets. And I've read that a lot of you have protein drinks and bars after w/o or for snack. My problem is that I have kidney disease and can't have as much protein as others. I can have a serving at each meal but the drinks and bars are way too much for me. Any suggestions on other ways I can build muscle with a little bit of protein? Is it going to take me twice as long to build up decent muscles? Thanx for all the suggestions:)

Jennay,
I don't eat a lot of protein...it seems to range anywhere from 7 to 25% on a daily basis. I thought it was toward the higher range, but when I recently calculated it out it seems to be closer to about 12 or 15% of my calories (I eat a totally plant-based diet). I really don't worry too much about protein....IMO it's highly overrated anyway;) I only am interested in definition...not bulk and it has been working very well for me.

Read the top article in this newletter, "Building your own High Performance Athletic Body." I think it will make you feel much better about your low protein diet:):

Again, this article is generalizing. Each body has it's own specific needs as evidenced by results of each of us on this board. Robin thinks protein is overrated and perhaps that's because her body only needs 15% of her calories from protein to maintain definition. I, on the other hand, started to gain definition only after I started adding animal based protein to my diet.

Since you have kidney disease, shouldn't you ask your doctor or a nutritionist and see what they recommend?

thanks gang. I do have a dr's appt in a month and plan to get a detailed diet from him. I never had to have such a plan put out for me but now that I am looking to define and tone more I want a more specific diet. I wasn't sure if there was anyone out there who achieved great results without depending on the extra protein. So thanks Robin and if I can look like that with low protein, I'm all for it. You all look fabulous! Very motivating:)

True, everybody is different and no one food plan works for everyone. My point "only" is that anyone can do just fine and even excel on a low protein diet. I just did not want Jennay to believe she is totally behind the eight ball because her protein "has to" be restricted due to her kidney disease because it's simply untrue.
