diet and breastfeeding

i'd love to get several opinions on this as i am a bit mixed up in what i have read and heard. anyone's experience would be welcome.

finn has been gassy since day 1. it varies in severity - a few times he has actually cried and screamed, but most of the time it is just lots of straining and some discomfort. i only offer him breastmilk. our pediatrician recommended simethicone (tinny tummies or equivalent) after each feeding, lots of time upright, and warm baths. this has helped, but he still has some bad days. i eat tons of fruits and veg, and yes, i eat brocolli, onions, peppers, etc. i do not drink milk but do eat cheese and yougart. my brother, also a pediatrician, said there is no proven link between gassy babies and mom's diets if the child has no evidence of allergy such as spitting up, blood in stool, or rash. my pediatrician yesterday told me not to eat veggies, that basically plain chicken and potatoes are the only things to eat!

anyone else have any thoughts on this? otherwise, finn did great at his 2 month visit - 9lbs, 10 oz, and while we both cried during the shots, we all felt better later that night. glad it is over with for a few weeks. thanks!

Morris, glad the check up went well. I definitely find that when I eat certain foods, Ashley is fussier. Lately, I have been lying her on her belly when she is fussy and this seems to help her belly.

I agree more with your brother. That said, I found that my daughter didn't do well the nights that I had onions, but other foods she was fine with. I would cut out the gassier foods one at a time and see if you notice a difference. Usually it's something that they grow out of and you can put the foods back in your diet as they get a little older. The main culprits that I've heard of are broccoli and onions. The simethicone drops never really worked for me and I did sit up a lot of nights with both my kids and bicycled their legs. Good luck!

My daughter was great - unless I at any pork products! Bacon, sausage, barbeque, ham sammies... isn't it bizzare? It took some time (and a few sleepless nights) to figure that one out. Do you keep a food diary? Maybe that would give you some clues...

Good luck!

thanks for the info. a lactation consultant recommended acidophilus for finn. never heard of that one. i will try watching the veggies more.
