diastisis

Cathlete
hi everyone

i kknow posts have been written about this, but i wanted to ask more questions. i had no issues with diastisis 1st pregnancy. i continued all ab work until delivery. maybe it was useless, but i felt better about it. this pregnancy i was doing crunches earlier in the week and noticed a little bulge when i contracted. i asked my doc yesterday and she said it was a mild separation. she was also surprised i was still doing crunches, even on a ball or incline. so my question now is, will i make it worse if i do abs? should i stop ab work? is there something useful i can do now for it? what do i do after delivery?

thanks for any help you can provide!!

Oh, jeez, Morris!
I'm sorry to hear that!
I know *nothing* about it - not an issue I've had w/ 1st 2 pregs. Maybe post something to Sheila's attention?

Hi Morris,

It happened to me with my second child last summer. I too did my
abs until the day I delivered on the stability ball and in the
" Perfect Pregnancy Workout." Mine too was a mild separation.
The mid wife was not the bit concerened. Morris, I continued to
do the ad exercises even though it might have made it worse ( it
didn't) I remember sitting up on the examine table in my
second trimester w/Taylor and it was visible then too. I was
warned to not work my abs after I delivered for atleast 6 weeks.
Since I am addicted to working out I was working my stomach 1 week
postpartum, again foolish. However I had no problems. My stomach
is tight and flat 7 months postpartum. No issues at all but I
agree w/Kate as far as Sheila being consulted. I know you are
extremely fit so I would not fret. But would not want you to
have a problem.

OK I *think* I have a separation too, but I want to make sure. Can you describe the "bulge"?

When I lift my head or try to sit up it's almost like there's a vertical bump that runs up and down my abs, and is most promounced below my belly button. Like my belly almost comes to a point (picture the roof of a house) all the way down the middle.

Is that a diastasis? I assume that it is (and am really bummed out that I have one), but I want to make sure.

And if so, I'm also very interested to hear if I will make this worse with ab work.

that is just what i have, melicm, for what it is worth. if you feel that area while you hold your head up, you can feel a slight separation. i am ummed too, but very encouraged after hearing from suzanne. maybe sheila can chime i? perhaps i should post for her!

I didn't really do ab workouts past 20 weeks or so. Lazy, I guess. :)

I haven't seen Shiela post here in years!!!!

I know I've read about ladies have diastisis on forum before, did you do a search?

Just bumping for Morris to hear from Sheila.

On a side note- I was told I had diastisis and since the mid wife
didn't tell me to stop I didn't. But mine was mild but it was really
freaky to see my stomach look like that. I was thinking about Morris
last night and I do think looking back it was there w/Jennifer too.
I am thining positively Morris it is perhaps what I experienced.
I had no pain do you??

no pain at all, luckily, and i have just uder 12 weeks to go (10 if i have any say!!). i will post for sheila and see if she can read. thanks!

Morris,

I always thought I was going two weeks early with Baby # 2.
I know the feeling. Uggh I was actually late. I was suprised
since we hear so often subsequent babies come earlier.
Not in my case.
But she was over one pound bigger.

Maybe to set your mind at ease especially since you will want to
work you abdominals you should call your doctor/mid wife. Are
you being seen every 2 weeks now? I know the once a week is
weeks(not too many) off but its worth a visit to have them
peek at your belly. You will know for sure that way. Just
that we worry about so many things as parents you can at least
scratch this one off the list.
