Cuticles on Toes and Fingernails

Hi-

Does anybody have any recommendations on what products to keep your cuticles looking nice?

My nails ( esp my toenails) need some desperate help around the cuticle area. I've used some cuticle removers, but they don't seem very effective, its like my cuticles are growing over my toenails, and I don't find it very attractive!

Suggestions?

Hi Lynn,

What do you do after you apply the cuticle remover? Do you push your cuticles back? The remover softens the cuticle so you can push it back with an orange stick, or as in your case - if it's extremely long, you can trim them. I prefer to use the clippers that nail salons use, which are called nippers (?) You can buy them in Walmart. You may want to invest in a pedicure/manicure first - that will get you on the right track. There's several creams you can apply to your cuticles to keep them smooth and moisturized. I love vitamin E oil. It's very good for hydrating. I also like using antifungals on my feet, even though I've never been diagnosed with any fungi - I think it makes my nails look lighter!

Hi Reese-

Yep, I do push the cuticles back, but they are so thick I can't quite it all off of the nail.

What's weird is that I never had this issue before, it just started recently.. am wondering if this is another side effect of turning 40. (?!)

Do you have a good recommendation on cuticle remover and creams to use post push back?

The best thing you can do is to make sure you always push them back, and the more regularly you do this the less of a problem it should become. You should actually never trim your cuticles. You can trim a hang nail but that is it. The reason is because the more you trim your cuticles as the skin is healing, the tougher and more bulbous it can become. It's REALLY bad for them. (I'm a nail tech by the way ) Keeping moisturized will help as well. If they are really thick, you can take a fine file and file the skin off the nail bed, being careful to stop before you remove any layers of nail bed.
