Cross Stitch

Does anyone do this, or know of anyone that does? The reason I'm asking is because I have a poem about my late grandmother that I'd like to give to my mom. And I'd like to have it done without me having to ask my mom if she knows of anyone that can do this (I don't want her to guess what it is). I want this to be a total suprise for her. If I would of thought of this sooner I could of had it to her for x-mas. Now, I'll just give it to her for Mother's Day.

Hi Jennie:

I have done Cross Stitching over the years but words and lettering are sometimes harder than you might think... depending on how long the poem is, and what type of font you are looking for... There are lots of places you can send your pictures and stuff too that will create a pattern, and I believe that I had found one online that I downloaded a while back...

Are you looking for someone to do it for you, or somehow finding a pattern converter to do yourself? :)

Jennie,

You might want to check out Yarnfever in the social group. I'm sure they can help you as well.

I admire anyone who can cross stitch. That can't be easy to do.

Janie

Dani, I'm looking for someone to do it for me. Not right now of course because of the holidays. There's 10 paragraphs, and each paragraph has 4 lines with 4 words in each line. I hope that makes sense.

Janie, I thought about asking them, but I just assumed they only worked with yarn.

hmmm... that might be a tough order to fill with that length... Not saying it can't be done, though :) Love a challenge, so let me think it over some more, see if I can find my converter program and if you have a Word Doc or a copy of your poem, you can PM me :) I absolutely LOVED creating a quilt pattern for my mother, WAY more than I enjoyed sewing it, but it was so worth the effort. So if nothing else, I can help you with a design... or to see if this is the best medium for your idea...

Just a side note, a lot of the sayings on Cross Stitch kits, such as the Footprints, Serinity Prayer, etc, are actually printed on the Adia cloth and just the design elements are stitched...

Do you have any ideas of what sort of font you would like? also, have you thought about anything that would boarder or accent the poem? I guess we can always see what the poem is and see if we can match something to it...

I'd be happy to help come up with a plan, and maybe even do it for you :)

Maybe a sewing/quilt sort of application could be utilized, ... you can print just about anything you want onto fabric and make a great wall hanging... Options are unlimited here...

Hi, Jennie! I love this idea and have done this very same thing. My mom's mom passed away a few short years ago and afterward, I tried to find a way to help keep her memory alive for my mom. I took the poem from my Grammy's funeral service 'pamphlet' (not sure what you call those things) and I converted it myself just by using simple graph paper and a cross stitch book with different fonts in it. (that took some time....I centered it all, counted and re-counted to make it just perfect.) Then, I cross stitched it all out. When that was done, I made a quilted wall hanging out of it with some really pretty purple and flowered material. It's hanging in my parents' house to this day. When I get a chance this week, I'll take a picture for it. (I'll try to get the pic taken tomorrow, ok?)

If Dani or anybody else can't help you, let me know. I'm always up for a challenge and a project (especially one that keeps my hands busy).

Gayle: I would love to see your work as well!

I don't profess to be an authority, so it's always nice to see/hear what others have done! :) I am simply a craft junky for the most part and my garage is proof positive that I have a hard time making a choice, so I don't! I just do what ever I'm in the mood for, whenever it strikes!

Everyone has different tastes and ideas, so Jennie sounds like you will have several people that are willing to help in any way we can :)

Dani, I'm not sure about what font I'd want, but if there was enough room for a border, I'd like that too. I never knew there were so many options when it came to this kind of stuff. Is it obvious I'm not crafty? :D

I so wish I would of thought of this months ago. This will be my moms 1st Christmas without her mother. :(

OK. I had my mom take a picture of the quilted hanging that I made her. Let me see if I can add it in this post:

The finished size of the entire hanging is 14" X 14".

Very nice Gayle! You did a GREAT job!

Jennie: would you be willing to either PM or post us your poem? This way we would be able to grid the words and see what you think. I am in no way trying to run the show here, just to offer some help, so feel free to do what works best for you, in your own time :) I think this is a very sweet idea that your mother will cherish!

I, too, had a wonderful memory book that my gramma made for me before her death and I bring it out and read (Ok, and cry too) when I miss her! This is a very personal gift and it would be an honor to be apart of it, no matter what the extent :) Just know there is no pressure.

That's not a problem at all Dani. I left the paper at work because I wanted to show my co-workers.

I totally forgot to look at this tonight. I've had a very stressful evening and it just slipped my mind. I will def. do it tomorrow.

I really appreciate any of the help that I'm givin, because when it comes to this stuff I'm clueless.

I am still not clear if you want to do the project yourself from a pattern or have it done.
If you are going to make it yourself, you have gotten some great suggestions already, but please do not underestimate the time that so many words will take.
If you want to have it done, you might want to consider putting together a digital image and bringing it to a sewing shop to have it made by an embroidery machine. There is a little place here that will do any design you bring in on any kind of fabric.
Counted crosstitch is really easy to do, but can look a little blocky (think pixelated). Stamped crosstitch is still easy but take some effort to make your stitches look even.
I think your mom will love this poem, it is such a beautiful idea. Good luck finding just the right way to get it done.

Here's the poem my uncle wrote for my grandmother.

This is for Jean
Mother of four
Grandmother and great
To children galore

She loved her daughters
Treated them the same
But I'll be darned
If she remembered their names

She liked to take trips
Like cruises and stuff
She lived life to the fullest
She could not get enough

She loved to go dancing
And sing in the choir
Her spunk and ambition
You had to admire

Christmas at her house
Was always a treat
There were presents and laughter
And good things to eat

Some things you could do
And she wouldn't care
But, don't you dare lean back
In the dining room chair

She'd say to the grandkids
"Come, give me a hug,
But please don't get crumbs
On my living room rug."

She'd pack things away
In boxes and jars
We used to play BINGO
For small candy bars

She loved Wesley Memorial
And had so many friends
I'd name them all for you
But the list never ends

Now, she's in Heaven
With the Father above
But she left with us all
Her heart, full of love

Thanks Jennie: What a great tribute!

I think that Dragonf1y brings up some good points about the blockiness (is that even a word? :p) or Pixel-like look of anything that is cross stitched, especially lettering... Was there some reason that you chose Cross Stitch over other fabric mediums? The other issue that might be of some importance is that the finished size will be long and skinny in it's dimensions because the poem is only 4-5 words wide, but fairly long... Might be hard to do much but a custom frame (which is also a bit pricey), unless you do what Gayle did and make it into a wall hanging and you can put various borders to even it out a bit in its dimensions.

Also, can you give us an idea of what color scheme(s) you would like in any accent borders or other pictures/artwork around the edges? Just curious what sort of things your Mother or Grandmother thought were special. a certain type of flower(s), themes such as ocean, nature, animals, native american, nautical, lighthouse, etc... so we have an idea of something that would make this even more special, personal and meaningful...

Maybe I am overthinking this :)

It doesn't have to be cross stitched, it's just the first thing that popped into my mind. I did try that website that someone posted (sorry can't remember who) and the lettering I liked was to big to fit everything in there.

I'd like it to have flowers, if that's possible.

Dani, do you have any other ideas of what I could do with this poem instead of having it cross stitched?

Jennie-do you scrapbook??? Do you have any of the scrapping supplies, tools, papers, TOYS??? You could make a scrapbook-like 'poster' and put it in a nice frame from your local craft store. Do you have an AC Moore or a Michael's in your area? They offer 40% discount coupons all the time which would make the frame and supplies VERY affordable for a project like this. I scrapbook all the time so that was the second idea that popped into my head after the cross stitch. (then again, if you don't scrap or never have, then you may have NO IDEA what I'm trying to explain! LOL)
