Cottage Cheese - what is the skinny?

I know this is going to sound *ridiculous*, but I have never eaten cottage cheese. I have, however, read in several places that it is a healthy, low fat food that provides good nutrients to the body. It is recommended on many programs too. It just looks yucky to me! ;) Anyway,I was chatting w/a friend last night that knows a lot about foods, etc. and she told me that cottage cheeese is "like the iceburg lettuce of the dairy family." In other words, it is empty and has nothing healthy and good in it - a filler.

What's the deal? And is it good or gross?

Christine :)

Definitely NOT true at all. She apparently hasnt read the nutrition labels on cottage cheese recently. Consider this (for non-fat or 1%): 80 calories in a half of a cup, next to no saturated fat, low in sugar, 13 g of protein, and 10% of Daily requirement for calcium. Cottage cheese blends well, so you can add protein to alll kinds of dishes when cooking. It may not be swiss or cheddar cheese and high in flavor, but it sure is healthier (less salt and fat) and it does taste good. Try it, I think you will like it. It is great with fruit, with oatmeal, and even as a sour cream substitute in dips.

Let us know if you like it.

I really don't think it is "like the iceburg lettuce of the dairy family". It does provide calcium, is lowfat, and provides a good portion of protein. Personally I don't like it plain. Instead I mix it with some kind of fruit especially crushed pineapple to mask the taste.

I use it as a veggie dressing. I dice up tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, mix in some romaine or spinach leaves, and mix in some cottage cheese and pepper. It's a great alternative to salad dressing!

Not at all! Its great for you. Great source of protein. And we know how important calcium is to women and new findings show that dairy is helpful in losing fat. I find for myself the texture of the fat free bothers me so I buy lowfat. But nonetheless I love it. Find what you like. I like Light n' lively the best, in the bright blue container. they also have little 1/2 cup snack packs which are great to carry around. If you have a sweet tooth add pineapple or mango for something exotic, or strawberries/blueberries which are fantastic. Or add to salad to "wet" it instead of adding extra dressing.

Another place you can use in is pancakes. been making these for years to curb my craving for comort food. Mix 1/2 cup oatmeal, 4-5 egg whites (your choice on how many) and 1/4-1/2 cup cottage cheese. Blend well and make like you would regular pancakes. Add fruit or sugar free syrup, its healthy FF heaven. For a special treat add a couple chocolate chips and you have chocolate chip pancakes.

Love cottage cheese, I add fruits on it and some stevia for my sweet tooth, someties I eat it as cream cheese on my whole wheat mini baguel, you can season it with salt and garlic, I do buy the nonfat cottage cheese, I also eat it with fruit on top of a multigrain waffle, cottage cheese is a dairy and a good snack.
The joy of moving, N;-)

See, I thought I knew differently than what she was telling me! Thanks for the clarification guys. I thought I was nuts when she came out with that! Since I don't really eat it, I hesitated in telling her all of the "knowledge" that I had on this topic ;) OK, I will give it a whirl - esp. in that pancake recipe!

thanks :)
