Cost of alteration?

Hello,

With 6 children and running a small business from home I rarely have time to go shopping. During spring I always get an urge to shop for dresses for the festivities Easter, graduations, etc.. I've been looking on the loft website and they have some excellent deals on some dresses I would love to have, up to 70% off. From my experience I always have the hardest time finding dresses, clothes that fit. I'm petite 5ft, flat chested. I normally would wear a size 2, but I know the clothes at the loft tends to run a little on the larger size. Does anyone know how much it would cost to get some dresses altered just incase they are a little on the big size? The dresses are excellent prize, but if I have to pay big bucks to have them altared I don't know if it would be worth it. the dresses are originally between $80-90 and now they are anywhere between $35-45. Great deal!

Thanks

It would completely depend on what you were having done to the dresses. I am small also, and spend a lot of money getting things altered. It is not cheap, especially if you find a good alterations person.

Hemming can run up to $20 per garment or more, depending on if there is a lining to hem as well as the outer part of the dress. Are you having the sides taken in? If so, that can involve changing the structure of the dress and can run into some money.

If the dresses are in the $35 range, I would guess that you would spend at least that much altering them.

Oh, and I would caution you against buying size 2 in ATL. (You do mean Ann Taylor Loft, right?). Based on your description of yourself, you'd probably wear a petite size 0.

Yes, I meant Ann Taylor Loft. That's the thing I they did not have size 0 petite, so I went for the size 2 thinking I can get them altered. The good news they are returnable! Once I receive the dresses I will get a prize quote on the alterations and if I think it's not worth it I will just return them to the store. I'ts worth to try, who knows if I'm lucky they will fit! Thanks!

What you save ends up getting spent on alteration charges. Its not worth it to me. If it doesn't fit properly, I don't buy it.

Have you asked the sales clerk to find items at another store? Its worth the shipping charge if you really like the outfit. If the store can't find the correct size, I usually can find it on E-Bay.

Yes I have. Unfortunately no store near me carries the dresses I like. That's my thought too on the alteration issue. I thought maybe if I like the dress so much I would get myself to the seamtress. The other day I was going through my clothes and I found some pants that I had purchase about 8 years ago but they needed to be altered to fit my lengh. Never got to the seamtress, they are still sitting in my dresser waiting to be taken to get altered. The good news is I can return the online order into my local loft store if I find it will be to expensive to altered to fit me. Thanks!
