:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

No tumors! She has a severe case of back arthritis, added to her hip arthritis. We're trying some new meds, but the vet says she's gonna be fine!

Thank you all SO MUCH for all your support over the last few days. I'm exhausted & completely stressed but SO relieved.

And boy, does it make all my other problems seem teeny tiny.........

Laura!

That is great news!! I know how much of a worry and stress these things can be! (I just took the spleen out of my own dog - Sage - a few weeks ago-thankfully it was a benign tumor-but I was a basket case for a few days!) Hopefully she will be feeling better on her new meds. BTW, what are the new meds? Have you heard of or tried a product called Welactin? It is a refined salmon oil supplement. I have had my dogs (currently aged 9 & 10) on it since Feb. and they seem to feel better than ever!

Edie...is the Welactin sold over the counter? I cannot give my dog the prescribed arthritis drugs due to her age and the negative side effects. She is now on doggie aspirin and glucosamine and mommy massages.

Thanks!

I think it's Rimidel? It's supposed to be non-steroidal--Melissa, maybe that's what your old girl isn't supposed to have?

The vet told me there are two non-steroidal drugs for this (deramax & rimidel), & that we should try these first b/c there are a lot of side effects w/steroidal medications.

Ah whatever, I'll do what I need to as long as she's comfortable (she writes as her wallet screams in agony).

That's wonderful news!! Whew........
I have a little dachshund that I adore to pieces. I know what you must have been going through. WHat a relief!

All that I know is that the last time the vet saw her, he specifically told me that many of the popular arthritis drugs for dogs have serious side effects which could kill a dog of Sheena's age (she will be 13 soon). He said that many of them cause the kidneys and liver to shut down.

My DH told me at lunch that he felt a mass on her hip this morning about as big as a marble. :( So maybe cancer is starting to set in...

I know that some people on this forum cannot believe I will not take her into the vet yet again, but she is still mobile, drinks water, eats well and to be quite honest it takes her 3 to 4 days to recover from a vet visit. She is senile and being taken out of her element upsets her terribly. I know that if he wanted to keep her overnight I would return to a dead animal. I have been there before with other pets and I just cannot do it this time. Know what I mean?

Yay Laura, I'm so glad. I hope to hear you posting soon that she is feeling much better too!! That had to be so heartbreaking!

That is wonderful news, Laura!!!!!! I am so happy for you, I have been thinking about you and Cosmo all morning.
Hopefully the new medication will make her feel better.

Take care,

Carola

Melissa, those sound like steroidal effects. Call your vet back & ask about the deramax or rimidel. I know my vet would've told me if those kinds of side effects were associated w/the meds.

Carola, can we please have an update on Jake? I've been thinking about you guys too........

Laura...good news!!! I hope the Rimadyl helps Cosmo. I used it one time on one of my labs, it worked great...:)

Melissa,

Welactin is only available from a veterinarian, even though it technically is not a "drug". You should ask your veterinarian about it. It is made by Nutramax.
