confused on hyperextensions

Hi guys...I have a hyperextension machine (roman chair) for my lower back at home and need help..all along I have been breathing on the way up...someone told me this was wrong and you breathe on the way down....but thats not when I am using the muscle...can someone tell me if I have been doing it wrong? TIA everyone!!

What do you mean by "breath"? There is inhalation and exhalation. I would inhale on the way up for back stability, and exhale on the way down. It's kind of the opposite of what you usually do (exhale on the positive move/exertion, and inhale on the negative), but better, IMO, for this move. You can also try inhaling while you are in the bottom position, holding your breath until you get to the hardest part of the lift, the exhaling forcefully (which is another way of getting core stability through the first part of the move).
