Anyone live around/near there that can tell me about it? Hubby is pushing that town as our new locale for the future. Can you sell me on it??:)

I live in St. Louis which is 1 and 1/2 hours from Columbia. I'll share what I know. Columbia is a nice town. It's a college town and a nice midwestern city. The people are friendly and helpful.
I believe it's a clean town.

I hope that helps a little.

Hi Janice, I lived there for about 7 years. It's a great college town with lots of good, affordable places to eat and go dancing, since many of its businesses cater to the college crowd. Because of the MU and Stephens College, there is a thriving artist's community, most of whom you'll meet on Elm and Ninth Streets. It has Katy Trail, where you can bike and hike, and there is Les Bourgeois Vineyards, about 10 miles west of Columbia, where the wine and food are affordable, and the view is beautiful. I had a ball of a time studying and living there. I wasn't too thrilled about the winters; they just about killed me. But the cost of living wasn't bad, and it is a great place to raise a family, if you decide to. It was chosen one of the top 10 places to live in America in the mid-90s. It's two hours away from St. Louis, about four hours from Kansas and about an hour from Jefferson City. I don't remember how far it is from the Lake of the Ozarks, where they have a sprawling outlet mall. I miss shopping there.

I went to college there and grew up in St. Louis - I left there in about 1990. It has grown a lot since then. It really is more of a town than a city. If you are looking for a lot of excitement it will be in short supply there, but you can have a quiet laid back lifestyle living there.

It really depends on where you are coming from. The midwest has pretty awful winters and really hot summers. I live in the NW now and I could never take that weather again.

The town is very nice - the people around the university are very liberal, the rest of the town is very conservative. I managed a restaurant downtown and you really get that small town feeling there. The schools are great and there is a lot of school money there - at least there was back in the day. The west side of town is where it has expanded the last 10 years and that is kind of the 'burbs for them.

Hope this helps - if you want to know more you can ask specific questions. I didn't know if you had kids, etc.

Missouri is beautiful if you don't mind flat and the cost of living is very manageable there.

Thanks for the info everyone. Sounds like a nice town, crappy weather. Oh well, guess you can't win em all!! :)

I live about 30 miles from Columbia. If you have any specific questions, you can e-mail me at [email protected]

Columbia is a nice community and fairly safe. It is very accessible because Intersate 70 runs right trough it. I do most of my shopping in Columbia, although somethings are hard to find and I have to try to get to St. Louis or Kansas City. There aren't any good sporting goods/running shoes stores!

As far as the weather, it just depends on where you are moving from! July - September can be stifling because of the humidity. The winters can be bitter, but the temps do stay below freezing for long periods of time. So, if we do get snow or ice, it is usually short-lived and melts in a day or two. Spring can be very windy (right now!).

I do enjoy the area. I originally grew up in northern Indiana, but moved to MO in 1993. I have been in the Columbia area since 1996 and I don't intend to leave. Actually, I have family members from Indiana who have also moved to the area because they like it so well.

Best wishes,

Tina
