Colon Cleansing

Hi all-

A friend of mine went out on her lunch break today and got some pills to take 3 times a day for a few weeks for colon cleansing. I searched the boards and saw that this has been discussed before. What were the final outcomes of those of you who have done this? Does this cleansing also help you get rid of some fat? She was told this (she isn't doing it for that reason) and I just don't know if I buy it! Just wanted to know your thoughts on those who have experienced it first hand. Thanks!

Some people swear by it others don't. When I was 40 I needed to have a colonscopy. The prep is a totally flushed digestive system but the process is a harsh one. You have to fast and then you overload your system with a liquid.

The average person probably doesn't need to do this "cleansing". Is your digestive system working? Do you suffer constipation or bloating? How many times do you eliminate per day? Then the true test, if you have corn and the cob how quickly does it pass?

If you have a slow digestive system could you increase your fiber and fluid intake and get the same effect of the pills?

The proponents of the cleansing process will explain that your intestines have ridges and pockets where "stuff" will accumulate. If your body didn't process it correctly you could get diverticulosis, a condition where you'll grow a pocket or sac outside the intestine which could make you really sick.

I've never tried the colon cleansing that your friend is. When I did my "purge", I did not feel well for a couple of days, of course that was a more rapid procedure, also medically required.

One of the problems with moving the "process" along with cleansers or laxatives is that if they are overused your body will slow down when you're not using them.

Maintaining a diet with fiber and plenty of fluids will probably move things along just fine.

There's practioners who claim that enemas are the answer. On VH1's "Rock Bodies" they actually visited one of the clinics. Not the best programming on the tube.

If you've ever eaten processed foods, a colon cleanse is a good idea. It can help clean out old, impacted fecal matter ("baked on" in a nice 98.6 degree environment!) . Some colon cleanses can also be a way of cleansing and detoxing the organs, especially the liver.

I would recommend a product called "oxypowder" which is an oxygen cleanse. I did it twice, with good results (coated tongue cleared, which can mean a reduction of bad yeast in the body). Once the intestines are cleared with this products, the oxygen can get into the blood stream to help clear the organs, or so they say.

I would not use a cleanse as a way of losing weight (especially fat weight, which it won't target). The only way to get rid of fat is to create a calorie deficit: more calories expended (through metabolic functions and activity) than ingested.

Some claim that adults can carry as much as 5-20 pounds of impacted fecal matter in their intestines (seeing some guys with big, hard guts makes this pausible, LOL!). If this is true, then a cleanse could cause some weight loss, but it's not fat loss.
