Coffee and health

Did you hear about the new study which found that coffee provides "more healthful antioxidants than any other food or beverage in the American diet".

Apparently coffee contains polyphenols, which "show promise as disease-fighters. Polyphenols act as antioxidants and, in the laboratory, have been shown to have antiviral and anticarcinogenic properties."

This is almost as good as when I found out that ice cream may help control weight.

DUUUUUUUDE. I love my coffee. Especially after my son was born ;) Thanks for sharing Nancy!

Always nice Nancy to find out I can still drink my 2 cups....http://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/x/coffeecup.gif[/img]...Thanks!!!...Carole

Did the study mention how much coffee you should be drinking daily? Is it a pot or two a day like I drink:p . It's always good to hear that coffee actually has some benefit. Thanks for the info.

Hi Carole and Aila, my java-loving friends!

They just said that the 2 cups per day that most people drink is good for them. They mentioned that moderation is important to avoid the jitters. I could have figured that out myself.

Great question, Emily. I'll have to read more articles to see if it's mentioned. The NY Times article didn't mention it.

This was on the Today show this morning too. I heard them say that they were going to discuss it later but never saw the piece. I am glad to hear that my java has some value in my diet ;)

Christine :)

I was wondering if it is the same for instant coffee or is it just for brewed coffee?

That is great news! Love my coffee every morning!

Nancy ~

That is just great! Here I was thinking I should give up my coffee for green tea in the AM. I'll usually have a glass of green tea with lunch. Just don't like hot green tea though.

Thanks for sharing!

Yeeey! This is the best news I've had all week. Thanks for sharing. One question: What is this you say about ice cream?!?!

From what I've read, coffee also has many acids in it that are unhealthy (it's not the caffeine that is the problem). Also, my accupuncturist suggested I not drink coffee (not a problem, since I don't) while I was in active healing mode (for a long-term shoulder/bicep tendon problem), as there is an acid in it (and in chocolate, and alcohol, and carbonated beverages) that has negative effects on the intestines (where a large part of our immune system is housed).

I guess it's a balancing act: finding things that have more good qualitites than bad.

For antioxidants, I'll take pomegranate juice, green tea, and will soon be trying goji berries (three items that may not have been tested in this study, because they are not a large part of the American diet).

That brings up a question: what foods did they test? Just foods that make up part of the 'Standard American Diet"? Since that's pretty full of processed foods and animal products, and low in veggies, berries, etc., I'm sure coffee stands out as high in antioxidants.

This still doesn't convince me that coffee has health benefits!

LOL Melrose! :7 :7 :7

There goes Kathryn tryin' to spoil it for us again! :p Just teasin' ya! I know you are just lookin' out for us coffee-lovin' fools! :)
