Clean Eating Principles

Several people have asked for a definition of "clean eating" since a few of us are going to start a clean eating check-in tomorrow.
Here is some info from Oxygen magazine's recent clean-eating issue:
Clean Eating Principles:
Eat 5-6 small meals every day.
Eat every 2-3 hours.
Combine lean protein and complex carbs at every meal.
Drink at least 8 cups of water each day.
Never miss a meal--especially breakfast.
AVOID all overprocessed, refined foods--esp. white flour and sugar.
AVOID all saturated and trans fats.
AVOID sugar-loaded colas and juices.
Consume adequate healthy fats, or essential fatty acids, every day.
Avoid alcolhol--another form of sugar.
AVOID all calorie-dense foods that have no nutritional value.
Rely on fresh fruits and veggies for fiber, vitamins, and enzymes.
Stick to proper portion sizes--forget about supersizing!
Carry a cooler loaded with clean-eating foods to get through your day.

If you do the check-in, you'll see that there's a wide range of degrees of clean eating that we follow. It doesn't matter if you don't eat 100% clean, in my opinion. I think the goal of our
challenge is to improve our eating habits gradually. If you're able
to find a copy of Oxygen's Clean Eating issue (dated Winter 2007),
I'd recommend buying it, as it summarizes the clean eating concept and gives several recipes and menu ideas for clean eating.
Hope this helps, and I'll "see" you at the check-in tomorrow!

Another helpful guide is the "Abs Diet" book. It was basically written for men, but it can be adapted for women (although I think there's one for women now, too). I've had a lot of success when I followed the basic principles of the eating plan.

I went to Borders and got "The Eat Clean Diet" by Tosca Reno for $16.95. I wasn't going to buy it, but just look at it while I was there but then I decided it would be a good book to have. It's got a grocery list, recipes, and all the principles. If I am going to do this, I wanted to have a reference to be able to look at. Anyway, I think it was a good investment.

DF and I went to the grocery to get a bunch of stuff yesterday and I am going to go to Whole Foods to get the stuff we couldn't get at the regular grocery store.

I really hope the check-in will help me to stick to it!!!

I read lots about this on the forum.

I find it very interesting and may get the book myself.

Also, don't forget to drink LOTS of water!

"Life is too short - Be the best you can be every single day!" :)

I don't know what inspired me to try it this time (as opposed to any other time people have been talking about it). I think, partly, because my eating habits really have been awful and I started thinking that with all the working out I do (and have done for years and years), I would see even more results if I tried this. DF and I are going to do our best to stick to it very strictly for two weeks, see how we feel, then see what we think. I can see us incorporating a lot of it into our lives, but I don't know that we will be as strict as we are planning to be for the next two weeks. I like the idea some people had of eating very clean on the weekdays and having the weekends be cheat days. I can't feel like I am totally depriving myself.

DF likes his beer or wine and I do love my chocolate. As far as eating six small meals, I am prone to skip meals (sometimes only eating once a day) and know that eating more regularly is something I really, really need to do.

Anyway, we'll see how it goes!

I do highly recommend the book. It's got a lot of great recipes and good info.
