Circuit Training vs. Cross Training

Cathe (Nation),

I was wondering what were the differences/similarities and pros/cons of circuit training versus cross training. People with which goals should do which one? I know its a general question, but I would love it if experts and people who participate in either or both programs would discuss.

Circuit training vs. cross-training

The definition of "circuit training" has evolved to mean an exercise format in which bouts of cardio (like step, or kickbox or hi/lo) are interspersed with bouts of resistance training, to get a constant cardio / muscle-pump switch up. It began as a "circuit" of muscle conditioning stations in gym environments where you started at one station, pumped out a few reps then bopped to the next station, to maximize time efficiency.

The definition of "cross training" is simply that one incorporates training for the three main physiological goals of exercise - cardiovascular health, muscle strength and endurance, and flexibility - rather than limiting one's self to only one of these. Further, cross training means that you incorporate many formats within each mode (running, swimming, step, hi/lo, boot camp for cardio; heavy-weight-low-rep lifting and lighter-weight-higher-rep lifting for strength and endurance respectively, and yoga, athletic stretch etc. for flexibility) rather than only doing one or two. The more formats at which you are skilled, the greater your potential all-around fitness can be, in part because of increased motor skills and in part because you never get too comfy or complacent in any one mode, which can take down the edge of your exertion.

I personally practice cross-training on a weekly basis, and I love a good kick-butt Cathe circuit workout every now and then!!!!!
