Chin-Up Check-In Fri 4.21

Soosan

Cathlete
I'm on my way to Krispy Kreme. I'm hoping some donuts will put me on my way to Briee's level. She's amazing.

Actually, I played tennis this morning and need to get ready for a YMCA function this evening. It's my son's and husband's birthday (14 and 44), but because of the Y thing, we can't celebrate until tomorrow.

I doubt I'll do any tomorrow as scheduled. My rhomboid isn't horribly painful, but my PT friend said I shouldn't do any activities that cause even the slightest amount of pain. (She's the one who can do a chin-up and to whom I'm not speaking.) Just about any UB work causes some pain, so I guess I'll have to back off for a week or two. Just what my ecto body needs - a setback.x(

Hi Sooooooooooooosan

Listen to your friend and rest the rhomboid.

Hope the function tonight goes well and that there's much happy, fun birthday celebration tomorrow. Have a great weekend.:)

Hi GF's! Just a quickie...we are headed out the door with the GK's but I wanted to say HI and explain why I have been AWOL lately...I, too, was feeling a slight overuse of one of my muscles in the right arm trying to attempt the chin-ups! :-( I am wondering if maybe I should have started out with only doing them twice a week instead of three? Anyway, it was getting to the point where it even hurt to brush my teeth! Talk about having to lay your toothbrush on the counter and lean over to brush your teeth! :7 Sooo, I am taking a leave of absence til it feels healed and then, I will start back doing them with more rest in-between. Waaaah, it felt good doing the cheat-negatives because I could feel the muscles in my arms, shoulders, chest and even core being used. Hopefully, this will heal and I'll be back at 'em with you all. Sooooosan, Good Luck with your healing too. Injuries sure are the pits! Enjoy the birthday celebration tomorrow. Happy Chinning everyone else!

Debbie...we've missed you. I hope you feel better soon and yes chinups are one thing you must ease into slowly. Just so much weight being pulled up!! Keep checking in K???

Soosan....YMCA...sounds like a fun function, what is this for?? Years before we were married I was frequently at our local Y, I loved it there. Hope your birthday celebrations go well. Thanks for the kind words regarding chinups. My body probably does lend itself to this type of work, but I DO REMEMBER when I had a struggle to do one, REALLY!!! And when we began this, I was sure that I would hardly do 3-4, muscle memory quickly jumps in.

I HATE pictures of myself, hate hate hate hate them (extremely low self esteem to be quite honest). But I'll try to get some sometime. Maybe. It's really not that exciting trust me. I have a really cute dog with more muscle than me - would this work? (sorry he can't do a chinup);) ;)

I will wait to do chins until tomorrow. Got some weighted gloves for kickbox...WOW do these make the shoulders ache!!!!

Briee

One more thing...I'm glad you have a friend that has told you to wait until the rhomboid is completely better. Sounds like she knows what she is talking about.

Catherine....I almost forgot. I was looking up some info on a past thread of years ago and I ran into a thread that I posted maybe 2-3 years back. I was asking others what the diameter of their bar was because I was having SUCH A HARD TIME WITH HANDGRIP/HANDSTRENGTH. I didn't even remember this. I was thinking that maybe a fatter bar would make my grip stronger (easier). Somehow, my grip must have improved over time, because it's not an issue now and I haven't changed my bar. Although maybe its the donuts??? So keep at chins and I'm better it will improve.

Briee

Hey ladies!! Today is a rest day for me. It feels so weird not lifting wts during "recovery week". I am gonna do some chinups tomorrow-gotta work on getting that 4rth in :p .

Briee, thanks for the input. It sounds like I just need to keep at it and my grip will accomadate me. I am totally impressed that you can do wide grip pullups!! Ya know I haven't actually tried any of those in a while (only negatives), maybe I'll try again and see if there's any progress. Right now I do want to focus most of my energy on increasing my chinup reps.

Debbie, sorry to hear that you have an injury x( Those aren't allowed round here!! Well, not supposed to be. Please keep checkin in though.

Soooooooooooosan, I just know once you are healed you are gonna turn into a chinup animal}( }(

Melody, how's the arms after that w/o yesterday??? A little DOMS??

I gotta figure out what I am gonna do next week. Haven't got a clue what rotation to do. What's good to do immediately after a P90X rotation? Also, I am going to Tempe Arizona Wed-Sun. Hope their gym has a chinup bar. What if they don't *********panic********* can not go 5 days without doing a chinup!!! Would have worked out better if recovery week was while I am gone.

Yes, thank you for asking.:p And I was brillant enough to do KPC as a follow-up this afternoon and I do not want to talk about how I'm feeling at this moment. :-( :+

I didn't get a chance to work on them today but I will tomorrow. I went biking all morning then took a long walk this afternoon. My friend from H.S. came to visit (she's from Chicago)and wore me out. She is doing a running race tomorrow in St. Paul. She is in amazing shape. The test-I showed her my bar. She was able to do about 3 chin ups. She said she use to do about 15. She said I inspired her to start doing them again. I can't believe I inspire anyone! Hopefully, I will be able to whip out 3 next time I see her!

Soooooosan-you are smart for resting your rhomboid.

Joanne

Joanne, keep it up and you'll be whipin them out!! Ya know this sounds crazy but I do better with my shoes off. I think they weight me down. Hmmmm, maybe next time I'll try them naked to see if my clothing is weighing me down   JK!!!! But am serious about doing them without shoes.

Catherine

Catherine-I'll try them with my shoes off today. Maybe, I should take my weighted vest off too - Ha Ha

Joanne

You all are right about resting the injury. If the tables were turned, I would of course advise the same for all of you. It's just that it doesn't bother me unless I'm doing chin-ups or other UB work so it almost doesn't feel like I'm injured. I guess I'll just do LB (holding dumbbells b/c holding a barbell aggravates it), cardio and yoga w/no sun salutations. How boring.

Debbie, so glad you stopped by but sorry to hear about your injury. I know you're smart enough to rest it. Hope you'll find the time to still chat with us!

Briee, the Y function was a pre-party thanking sponsors who are helping to fund a ball we're having in June. I'm Director of Development (job-share with a close friend - about 15 hrs a week) and do mostly event-based fund raising to support the Y's Guardian Program scholarship fund. Our philosophy is that no one gets turned away from programs or membership due to an inability to pay so we need to raise a lot of money to make sure this happens. The party took place at this year's ball chair's beautiful house. It was a really lovely party.

Sorry for the long post!

I'd love to see those pictures, but don't feel you have to if you're uncomfortable doing so. Can't imagine that you have low self-esteem, judging from your warm, hilarious posts.

Catherine, you're really going gangbusters with these. What are you going to do in AZ? I'm sure there'll be at least a curtain rod or something to do a chin-up from.:p

Melody, I guess you did KPC after your four-hour donut run?

Joanne, do you bike often? How nice to see an old friend, although I'm assuming you're not speaking to her anymore after her chin-up demonstration. Funny how we're becoming chin-up evangelists. Randy (the guy who was at my dinner party a couple weeks ago) just bought one and the daughter of another friend has been begging her mom to get one too. She recently switched from gymnastics (Elite level) to diving so is obviously not chin-up-impaired. She said they had to do two sets of 20 every practice. She cranked out a few on my bar, so I added her to the not-speaking-to list. (Sheesh! it's getting long!) Also, I NEVER do them with shoes on. Maybe I'll strip next time per Catherine's suggestion.

Hello all you naked chinup gals. Imagine the images in my brain.}( :+

Gee, now we can't speak to Joanne's friend or any gymnasts?

FYI, KPC following leg day than BSB day was a tough one for me. I'm feeling it today.

Just for the record I never made the donut run but there is an out of town trip planned for tomorrow and we will be passing a couple of Dunkin Donuts. I'll pick up a few dozen, come home, hang them on the bar, strip, and work on the chinups...on Monday, because Sunday is rest day.

Seriously, you gals are inspiring and amazing. I don't really know what on earth made ME read the original post about a chinup check in (because the thought never entered my mind) but I'm glad I did. I seriously want to do a chinup before I die - and I refuse to set a more specific goal than that at the moment.:7

Melody, You WILL do one- even if I have to (lovingly) set a fire under your ars to get it up there ;-) Seriously, it took me 9 weeks of doing P90X before I discovered I could actually do one!!! I was beginning to think (like you) that I would never be able to. I started out doing an attempt at one at the beginning of each workout. But then I stopped and just did negatives untill one day I tried the attempt and it was REAL!!

For me this is helpful because it keeps me motivated to have a goal. It breaks the boredom from working out to know that there is a method to the madness }( }( So this check in has been more than helpful!!

I did core synergistics this morning. I love that workout. I will be doing some chinups (naked) and negatives a little later.

Catherine

So now we not only have to do chin-ups and pull-ups, but we have to do them naked while eating donuts? Well then....I knew I joined this group for a reason!

Anyway, today was 90x back/biceps so there were lots of assisted chin-ups and pull-ups. My back muscles are officially on strike.

Ok, I'm back. Let's see,... naked chinups. Set one 3 chinups, 4 negatives (10 ct), 3min rest; set two 2.5 chinups 4 neg, 3min rest; set three 2 chins, 4 negatives; 4 min rest; set four 2 chinups. Although I really didn't do them naked, barefoot yes, naked no!! Those negatives kick my a$$ everytime.

BTW my dh is heartbroken. He has hemorrhoids and I told him not to do chinups or pullups until they are gone. He has never been depressed cause he can not workout (really he doesn't workout much). But it's exciting to see him WANT to do something!!

Catherine

ETA: forgot to mention, really feeling them in my forearms today!! Haven't noticed that before. Maybe that means my grip is getting better (crosses fingers)
