Chest Press/Shoulder Grinding

HI Everyone,

I also posted my question to Cathe, sorry for the duplication, but I need help.

I have recently stated to get an uncomfortable grinding feeling in my shoulder when beggining to press up on the chest press with a barbell or dumbell. I haven't had this before. Can you give me some suggestions as to what I am doing wrong/ Thanks, Melissa

Good morning,

I've not seen your name before so I'm not sure of your fitness level or experience with working out.

If you are an advanced exerciser and completely comfortable that your form is impeccable, my suggest is that you seek medical attention. You should not have grinding in your shoulder. This could be a sign of a torn rotator cuff.

If you are a new exerciser not totally familiar with proper form, I suggest that you watch Cathe & crew very carefully to make sure you are mimicing them perfectly. Be sure your arms are not going any lower than parallel with the bench/step when you are at your lowest point of the exercise. Proper form should stop the grinding you feel.

Another thing to watch for is that same feeling when doing shoulder exercises. This would be a sure sign of something not right with your shoulder joint rather than a form problem.

I do not have trouble when doing any other exercise. Also, I have been using weights for over a year now. I think I am holding my upper arm the wrong way for some reason. I can't figure it out. Melissa

I think I answered my own question after reviewing form for chest press. I think I started to hold my dumbell out of line with my elbow. Anyhow, I guess it is good to review proper form even after you have benn exercising a while. Melissa
