Cardio on "Body For Life"

Cathlete
Hi.. Can I ask any of you doing "Body For Life", what sort of cardio do you do?
I invisaged that I could possibly do an aerobic dvd in my house to fulfill my cardio portions of the plan but I only have a Leslie Sansone, Walk away the pounds (3 mile) and a Susan Powter dvd.
Are these going to be useless?
I am keen to know what others think..
Thanks,
Kelly

RE: Cardio on

HI Kelly,
Running is my main form of cardio.I may not do the run like explained in the book but when I go,I go for about 70 min.(14kms)I figure thats probably better then the short run and may help me get to my goals faster.BUT when I use my treadmill,I will do more of an interval type workout.I like doing that on the treadmill anyway b/c time goes by faster.
I don't know anything about the two workouts you explained but if they are not intense, I would say that they aren;t much good. The theroy with BFL is that you are suppose to work your hardest.Push yourself. It doesn't seem like either one of the workouts you named would make you reach a 10.
Can you run outside? I know you may not have every ran before but the book explains it on a level from 5-10.10 of course making you want to throw up, while the 5 would be a light walk. But a 8 for me and a 8 for you would probably be two different levels. But the point is....thats my 8 and thats your 8.Do you understand what I am saying? You have to push yourself , even if it isn't as fast as when I would push myself. It is about what works for you.Eventually you would get faster with time.
If you can't get outside for a 20 min run then I would REALLY consider using one of Cathes interval workouts.Thats what I used last year before I had my treadmill and when it was winter outside.
I hope I helped.

RE: Cardio on

Hi Lori,
Thanks you your reply..
Which of Cathes DVD's are interval workouts?
I am still too heavy and unfit to run outside yet but I do get what you saying. I have a goal to run outside eventually.
I live in Sydney which is slowly approaching Autumn so it is going to get colder and colder so I will have to do something inside as it will be too frosty before long.
Thank you again..
have a happy easter!
Kelly

RE: Cardio on

Either Interval max OR imax2.You would only need to do about 1/2 of the workout. The full workout is 45 min so you only need to do 20 min.I also use to use the Terminator DVD.I can't remember which workout I would do but one of them was ideal. If I look at the case I will remember.

RE: Cardio on

Hey Kelly...

Do you have to be a certain weight and fitness level to run on the streets of Sydney? If so, I am glad I live in United States!:) You sure don't look heavy to me in your picture....

RE: Cardio on

Hi janice,
Ha ha .. No! you don't have to be a certain weight or fitness level to run on the streets of Sydney.. unless it's Bondi Beach or some place where only the lifesavers and crazily fit people run!
I meant I am still too heavy and unfit to run outside as opposed to a treadmill or something like that.
Where I live there aren't many places to run, I do admit.. too much traffic, main roads and the like.
That photo was taken before I put on 25 kilos when my daughter got sick 2 years ago. I WISH I still looked like that, it's the only photo I have and I guess it's an incentive. (I look a BIT like that)
I feel too top heavy to run just yet, when I gained back the weight it all seemed to come to my boobs!
I guess I should just do a running program (I have enough books on the subject)you know, do a walk/run thing.. bite the bullet.
I guess that is the "pushing yourself" that Lori mentioned earlier and it may be the only way that I will successfully attain the results I want with Body For Life, or any program for that matter!
You did make me smile though.. thanks. :)
Happy Easter to you and yours,
Kelly :7

RE: Cardio on

Kelly...I can relate to your discomfort with too much bounce in the boobs! I am a "C" cup but when I was pg and nursing my kids I was a freakin "G" cup and it was uncomfortable to just walk to the car with all that breast tissue movin & shakin. And trying to find exercise bras that can strap down that kind of a load is next to impossible or when you do find one they cost $100.

So, believe me, I can sympathize. What I did do just so I could walk (for exercise I mean) was to wear my regular underwire support bra and then put on two pull-over-your-head type of sports bras and that system worked fine. The painful bounce was harnessed and I could actually get up to a pretty good speed when walking. Now, I never jogged because that was too much bounce and it hurt...but I was also breastfeeding so my boobs were heavy besides huge.

And make sure you are also doing weight training to start building back lean muscle tissue.

Goodluck to you! :)

RE: Cardio on

Thank you for the advice, I had never thought of wearing two bras at the same time. I am going to try that.
What do you think of bootcamp as an appropriate cardio workout?
I had a look at the clip last night and it looked fantastic!
The intervals dvd looks a bit scarey to me!
Kelly
PS) I really am so pleased about the two bra thing! :)

RE: Cardio on

Kelly,
Bootcamp is an awesome workout.I think it is alot of peoples favorite.I use BC and mix it up with a run on the treadmill, which I may do today.I think you would see results with BC but don't be fooled...it isn't as easy as it looks.:)

RE: Cardio on

Boot camp is a fav with me.The dvd is great you can do the cardio a couple of times if you want to get in your 20mins I do that sometimes with no breaks except when the exercise is changing.Or you can take a 30-60 sec break between segments to make the 20min.It is a high intensity workout and could be used for bfl.The dvd also contains a premix cardio and legs you can also use that as a bfl method as you are letting your heart come down a little before upping the intensity again.I did this one the other day and used heavy wts for the legs and it is a "breathless" workout meaning I was gasping for air;-) It is athletic which I personaly love and can't wait for the high step advanced to be released as it sounds like a bc2 I hope there are premixes on the new one.
Good luck with bfl I completed a challenge a couple of yrs ago I was so disciplened I only ate bad foods on cheat day and never ate anything I wasn't suppose to.I sometimes think I should do it again just to lean out a bit because it did make me very lean.I still stick to the 6 meals a day plan but eat food that is not on the list.I lost 11 inches and 11 pounds and found a 6 pack abs on bfl.The plan is great because you get to eat real food:9

RE: Cardio on

Shelia,
I think that is why I enjoy BFL so well.I am not into burgers and fries anyway so I don't miss that. But I like the fact that i can eat carbs, coffee and have my treat day.I find that so many books and diets on the market now are very restrictive and aren't realistic to life.I think that if BFL became a habit you could continue it for a long time.YOu would have your occasionally big meal once or twice a week but other then that,I think it is more realistic then other programs.
Just my 2 cents:)
