Cardio Coach #4 and Question

This is my favorite so far! I've done 1,7, and now 4. Eight is next I think.

Question, I have a Lifefiness Elliptical that has range of 1-20 for difficulty levels. I find Sean's level 3 & 4 not as difficult as he makes it sound like it should be. I've began to double the levels, if he says level 3---I do 6, level 4---I do 8. Anyone else do this? FYI, I am a big cardio junkie---

I find my HR going up, but never anaerboic, even at 8 and going at a pace of 65-68. Which is okay, b/c I shouldn't get anaerobic in my condition anyway.

Sean's levels are based on perceived exertion, not your settings. So, a level 1 would be recovery, level 2 would be a light effort, level 3 would be like a orange zone/steady state harder aerobic effort and level 4 would be red zone/anaerobic. You adjust your settings to match the level you should be at. At least that's the way I do the workouts.

I'm sure that someone else will explain it better!

Sean's levels do not correspond to levels on your cardio equipment. His levels are levels of perceived exertion, or heart rate (if you use a heart rate monitor). The resistance you choose on your equipment should be based on your own abilities. Sean's Level 3 doesn't necessarily correlate with a Level 3 on your elliptical. You need to adjust your settings so that you reach the right perceived exertion. Everyone will have different settings to achieve Sean's Level 3 - you might need to set your machine at 13, while someone else would need to set it at 7. You need to play with your settings until you feel the proper level of exertion. Does that make sense?

Yes! Thank you, that makes much better sense then. :)
