Can't believe how much I spent on canned fish

Cathlete
I just ordered 6 3.7 oz. cans of tuna and 6 3.7 oz. cans of salmon from www.vitalchoice.com and the total was $55.75 with shipping of $9.95 for a total of $65.70.

I'm glad vitalchoice is there, and I think the products are excellent, but isn't there a less expensive way to be safe from mercury and PCBs? I don't have a Costco or a Trader Joe's or anything like that here in the city. I can only go where the subway takes me. Any ideas?

I tried "chunk lite" tuna from the supermarket but it was awful. :-(

Thanks for any suggestions,

Nancy

can't be of any help but i started buying the pouches when i catch them on sale. it has a slightly fresher taste then the can but its pretty much the same thing but no water.

You don't even want to know what I have paid for canned tuna. I buy the Italian imports packed in olive oil. Once you've tried it you absolutely cannot eat the stuff packed in water.

Wow. That's impressive, ladies!!

Makes me think maybe I don't like tuna because I have a discriminating palate rather than tuna itself is yucky.

There's hope for tuna and me yet...

I buy the chunk lite in cans from the store almost every week in whatever brand is cheapest/on sale! DH and I really like tuna. I can't afford that fancier, healthier brand so I guess I'll take what I can get!:p

holy crap. you spent that for 6 cans of fish? are there gold coins in the cans?

Wendy - chunk lite has less mercury than solid white or chunk white, so you should be fine. But even so, you probably shouldn't eat the chunk lite more than twice per week.

When I order the cans of Alaskan salmon I know I can eat a can 4-5 nights per week in my salad, and it won't hurt me. Since I eat a lot of fish, I need to be careful.

Phew! We don't eat it more than twice per week so I'm good to go!

Thanks!:)

LOL at Debbie! You crack me up with the things you come out with! :7

Debbie-
And tiny little cans at that. :-(

But, I guess it's a priority for me. I've always been all about the food. Even when I was in school and couldn't afford to go anywhere or do anything, I ate well. Just trying to make myself feel better here. :-(

oh I hear ya Nancy. I was just kinda blown away, esp as a fellow NY where everything is so darn expensive. I just never thought about the importance of something like that. cheers to your health ;)

The city is expensive, Debbie, but there are some advantages. For example, I don't own a car and I don't have to heat a house. And I don't have to spend much on furniture. I think that entitles me to at least 12 cans of fish. At least according to my unique logic. :+
