Cancun!

We're finally taking our honeymoon (married last summer) and will be leaving for Cancun at the end of the month. Anyone have any travel tips---places to eat (that don't break the bank!), things to do, or other "need to know" things? We'll be staying right in Cancun.

Also, I haven't flown in quite awhile and was reading up on what I can bring onto the plane. Am I reading correctly that the only food or drink I can bring on the plane is what I purchase after I go through the security checkpoint?? I really don't want to have to rely on airport food!x( I have a "funny" stomach and have always packed my own snacks.

TIA!!!

I've been to Playa del Carmen the past 2 years (right by Cancun) and you'll have a blast. The biggest tip I can give you is when your on the plane to Cancun they will give you a customs sheet that you must fill out - it will look like just a little stub but KEEP IT. Do NOT throw this away. You'll need it to get back on the plane to come home.

My other tip, when you get to Cancun airport people will come up to you and try to carry your bags for you. Just tell them "No." It's just easier to carry your own and you don't have to tip them.

I assume you're staying at an all inclusive resort. They all have filtered water brought in so you as long as you're on the resort you can drink the water without worry:)

You'll have a blast. Congratulations and have fun.

If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

Oh, and wear clothes in layers so when you get to that warm weather you can lose layers so you're not sweating like crazy until you have a chance to change at your resort.

Ditto to what Wendy said. Definately just carry your own bags, when you get off the plane, you will be asked 'numerous' times, say 'NO'. And its really not far that you have carry your luggage.

Also be aware of people selling time shares. That is big there.

We stayed about 20 min, south of Cancun and loved it. No sickness at all. We ate pretty much everything and brushed teeth with the faucet water. It was filtered. They did provided bottled water too.
Only drink the water on your resort if its filtered. I would order bottled water if you eat anywhere off the resort.

When walking thru cancun, carry only a limited amount of cash. I felt safe there, but you never know.

You'll have a blast!! Congrats!

Alicia is right, when you first get to your resort someone will greet you and after you check in they want you to sit and they'll go over the sightseeing, etc. They are the ones selling Timeshares. They'll offer you money, meals, etc. if you sign up to go to a presentation.

The first time we went we got suckered into a 15 minute presentation where he told us all the stuff we'd get for free if we just went to this "outing" the next day which was actually for timeshares which they don't tell you. Then, he asked for our credit card, etc. as a "formality". We told them we weren't interested but they can be a bit relentless since they are making commission for each person they get to sign up to go to the presentation. Just be firm with them and if possible, don't even sit down with them to begin with.

Hi!!

My husband and I went to Cancun just a few months ago. I have a funky stomach as well and took my own snacks. I packed a lot into my suitcase and had some pretzels in my carry on. It's liquids that cannot be taken through checkpoints.

We had a great time in Cancun though. Something that was really fun that we did was a day trip to Xel-Ha. It is a water park that is all inclusive and I mean ALL inclusive. The fee you pay for entry includes all food, all drinks, including alcoholic drinks, equipment for snorkeling, swimming, towels, etc. There is a trail you can bike around the park and bikes are provided. There is an area of hammocks where you can just relax. There are a ton of beach chairs everywhere just to sit on and get some sun. It is a beautiful place. We had a blast!! The food there is really good as well.

Oh and it's not like a water park like you think of a Six Flags or like that. It is a natural waterpark. It's like this huge lagoon with a running river, trails all around it, ponds, etc. The scenery alone is incredible. :)

We also took a short trip to Mayan ruins. That was not as fun as Xel-Ha but still neat to see.

Hope this helps! Have an awesome time!!!

You're going to have a great time! So beautiful and affordable (compared to Hawaii). The sands and waters are better than Hawaii.

We went in the summer of 2006, right after one of the biggest hurricanes ever and they were still rebuilding. So, Cancun was relatively quiet still and VERY affordable. We stayed in a 4-star hotel for $89 per night.

Regarding the time shares: We actually had a very positive experience with the Palace resorts presentation and got MANY free perks. If you can withstand the pressure, I would go to one, especially to the Palace resorts. AMAZING place, worth checking out.

Food will cost about what you'd pay in large cities in the US.

Use the bus that runs along the main strip. SO cheap.

Once of the many things that I loved about Cancun were the locals. They were all so warm and friendly, unlike the locals in Jamaica, which is why we'll choose Cancun over Jamaica in the future.

Thank you to those who have given your travel advice! I'm definitely writing down the waterpark--sounds right up our alley. We may take in a timeshare tour. Yes, just for the free perks :). I have been on several, including in Mexico, with my parents over the years, so I'm very aware of how high pressure they can be.
Thanks again!!
